Seems to be a good deal. Plus I am betting MSI will raise the price a bit when the 6 cell ships and makes it a third SKU.

Yeah, but the keyboard on the Eees blows. I'm waiting on Dell's entry before I get a netbook.

Same here.
I really like the Acer but the SSD speeds sound horrible.
Probably would have to DIY replace it with that CF Card to ZIF trick.
I would rather get a 4GB super fast SSD in the Acer than 8GB of criminally slow flash memory.

Some updates I have come across. I saw a small blurb o digitimes that Lenovo is coming to the party by the end of September. No specs were given just said they were coming.

It also looks like I was right and MSI is raising the price on the six cell. Laptop review is reporting that it is going to be $599. At $50 more than the 1000H it looks like a tough sell to me.

I think some of these use 1.8" drives, not 2.5". You'll have to find out which.

Apparently, there are two SSD's being shipped with the Apire One:

1. Intel SSD (SSDPAM0008G1EA): 23 MB/sec Read / 5 MB/sec Write
2. Samsung SSD (P-SSD 1800): 30-35 MB/sec Read / 13 MB/sec Write

While not blazing, the Samsung is quite a bit faster. You can read more on how to figure out which one you've got here: http://www.aspireoneuser.com/f...4&t=303&st=0&sk=t&sd=a . It looks like buying from a canadian retailer right now gets you the faster SSD.

As for upgrade path options, the Acer uses a 1.8 ZIF connection, and a user in the forums bought a CF to ZIF connector ($5 on ebay) and installed a CF card, which makes it much faster than the default SSD (at least with a 300x CF): http://www.aspireoneuser.com/f...opic.php?f=7&t=59#p479

Likewise, you can buy a 1.8" ZIF hd (toshiba or hitachi) to insert into the system as well: http://www.aspireoneuser.com/f...ic.php?f=7&t=361#p3451 and someone also stuck an old 5th gen ipod hd in it as well.

You can also upgrade the SSD in the system to a faster one if you choose, someone bought a 16gb one that was decently fast for like $50.

You can snag an Aspire One for $300 using the MSN 25% cashback on ebay, which gives you some cash to get the DIY stuff and have a nice little machine.

Interesting, I wouldn't really feel comfortable having the drive just taped down inside the case though.

Yup the ZIF to CF trick is what I am considering (IF I get the Aspire).

Anybody have any idea when the Dell E will land?
Would love to see some benchmarks on the Dell's SSD as well as whether it can be DIY upgraded.

Based on the info on Gizmodo, the Dell is going to have the intel SSD (38MB/s read and 10MB/s write).
The SSD is going to be a mini pci-e card.
That means it probably will be impossible/hard to replace it with a custom/DIY SSD for faster speeds.
I am still tempted to get in on the netbook game but have started re-considering what I want from the netbook.

I already have a 12" laptop that is pretty thin and light (x60 Tablet)
I really see myself using it as a websurfing device and/or for reading RSS feeds/getting news/checking emails.
For most of these uses I don't really care what OS the device runs.
BUT I want it to be pretty much instant on ... it just takes too long to boot the x60t, it runs too hot and the screen is too bad outside.
Maybe I will look at the Nokia MID ... ?

What are you looking for in the netbook?
Any other recommendations for MIDs?

Right now the Ideapad is looking pretty temping. I like the eee 901, but $600 is much too much. $365 for the Ideapad is an awesome deal. Now just to wait a few more days to see what Dell has to offer.

Agreed.

But I've heard there going to release another, bit more beefy version. Its supposed to have a bigger HDD, more ram, and a bigger battery. Anyone hear about it?

I think there's a $100 MIR on those at Newegg right now.

Acer has dropped the price of the Aspire one to 329 and 349 respectively.

Not too shabby.

lol guess the rumor was false then.

They waited too long for me.
2-3 weeks ago, I would probably just have bought it.

Now ... I don't really need a netbook (my main PC/laptop is already very thin and light).
