what's so special about it? it obviously isn't the price. but comparing it to the 500$ off w/ 200$ MIR when i got my 8600, most deals don't seem all that good. :/

if there's a better deal on a comparable product available today, then you should definitely post it.

Right on onelove - this h*m* is a flamer for sure

what people overlook is that thsi comes with a dvd burner, enough memory and harddrive space and a wireless card, so there is very little left to be desired even if it were a desktop

I'm inclined to say warm based on a.) the speed of the P4M, b.) the XP Home, and mostly, the weight...

I own this laptop and I can't say it is extremely heavy; maybe compared to a super-light laptop it is but only if your going to carry it around every single day would I say to look for something a little bit lighter. This is an ok deal for whats currently available for dell deals. The DVD-RW drive is incl. plus a bigger hard drive and wireless card so it is decent.

its not that bad. i'd consider the 9100, and XPS extremely heavy, not this. I throw this in my backpack and take to some classes a few times a week and it's fine.

I own one of these laptops and I Hate It!! Its so big, and it feels so cheap. The battery life Sucks unless you perchase an extra and remove the floppy to fit it. Still it can't game very well, warcraft3-ya: HL2-don't try it.

Buy a IBM thinkpad, a Sony vaio or a Apple. Dell inspirion laptops are Cheap for a reason.

I wanted just second what blazerazor says. These laptops are very cheaply put together. If it is just gonna sit on your desk that it may be alright but if you move around with it look elsewhere. After checking out a friend's thinkpad and an Apple at the store, you truly see how cheap the plastic is used to construct these laptops.

Don't have much against 8600, except that it feels a bit flimsy and sluggish at times (when gaming and using cpu intensive apps). 9100 or 9200 are heavier but much more powerful if you want to game or photoshop, etc. Just my 2 cents.

If you want a laptop that can take a lot of abuse, then I would agree and pay more and get something more durable (or buy a really nice laptop carrying case/bag). Its really not that heavy, and the battery life I'd say is good (over four hours) unless you have to have the brightness at the highest level. I'd say the gaming problem is more with the video card in this deal... you can upgrade it for either $89 or $99 to a 9600 Pro which is a good card for a laptop.

I have an Dell 8600. 1.6 Pentium M, 512mb, 8x dvd+rw, 32mb video, wireless, WSXGA+, etc. First, let me say my total price was just $812 (the $750 off coupon) so I'm biased on price.

First, battery life. It rocks. I get about 5 hours of normal usage.
Second, screen. Its great. 1680x1050, very crisp and bright.
Third, speed. It is very fast. Photoshop runs just fine on mine. 1.6 is the equivalent of a 2.4 or so Pentium 4.
Fourth, build quality. Its mediocre. But its not a big deal, unless you throw it around or anything.
Fifth, noise. It is quiet. Buy anything with a Pentium 4 or AMD and see the difference.
Sixth, games. I don't play them so I can't comment. You can get a good card if you want one.

Anyways, it is a good laptop.
