I have a machine with two 30 gig hard drives...how many partitions should I have and how do I set up the partitions easily...what program can I use....can I use fdisk? I know I need at least 3 partitions, right?
you can have linux do it automatically, actually suse those this, i dont know about RH. but you can always use the good old dos "fdisk" way or ust partition magic.
You don't really need to setup those partitions beforehand... at the very beginning of RedHat setup it will let you run fdisk to create the partitions.
Besides, you need to create Linux partitions (instead of FAT, FAT32, etc... ) and Linux Swap partitions, which I dont think DOS fdisk will let you do...
I tried to use fdisk to clean the hard drives but it wouldn't let me get rid of the extended partition for some reason...but now I'm using some partition program and it seems to be wiping out everything. so, I don't need to any type of format when I begin the installation right?
Is there any way to have Linux automatically obtain an IP address? Or do I have to give it one, the current network I have obtains IP addresses automatically under windows 98 & 2000.
No, you should not need any format before setup... you should be able to create the partition during setup and RedHat will format the partitions before it actually copies the files...
And yes, you can have RedHat obtain IP automatically... there should be an option avaliable when you configure your network settings...
