Intel 600p or Samsung 850 evo?

So I was set on getting a new 500gb m.2 drive for my 8700k build and the Samsung 850 evo seemed like the winner. But I spotted the Intel 600p at only about £20 more - not much but I don't want to spend the cash and then not get any benefit.

I know one is SATA and the other NVMe but in the real world will I see any difference? The Samsung is a quality drive. Heavy gamer and then general use - work (O365/Mail etc) and streaming videos.

I severely doubt you'd even notice any difference outside benchmarks. Both are more then adequate for what you're describing. If that £20 buys you an upgrade somewhere else, then by all means get the 850. If the £20 isn't important then get the 600p, just to get an NVMe drive to play with...

I have a 512GB 600p myself, and I'm quite happy with it. It does, however, use SLC cache. So its not great for writing large amounts of data at a time.

In the U.S. Samsung 850 EVOs are often more on sale than the Intel's NVMe. If it's just 20 more then get the NVMe. It's not going away and you might as well learn how to use it. Not to mention that it is further reduced latency. Yes, in the real world you may not notice a difference most of the time between it and Samsung, but that's just because the 850 is just FANTASTIC.

I think the Evo 850 500GB is on sale right now on Newegg, $120 maybe?

Go with the evo. In AT's benchmark of the 600p, the same size 850 evo was faster in over 2/3 of the tests.

The 600p is only faster for short burst sequential reads. Writes, slower. Longer reads, slower. Randoms, slower. Intel really dropped the ball with the 600p.

Thanks for all the comments. No matter which way I slice it - I keep coming back to the evo. It just seems to be the sweet spot of overall performance and price i.e. no real weak areas and cost is not the lowest or highest.

It's the 850 or go 960 NVMe but the cost is a bit of a step up and I'll not see any real world difference. But then at the back of my head I'll be thinking "mmmm.. wonder if the NVMe would have been quicker there???"

I upgraded all my systems from 850 evos to 900 series pro drives. I have no regrets about that. I used to dual boot two W10 installs, one on an 850 evo and one on a 960 pro. Going from one to the other, I could easily notice an increase in overall responsiveness on the 960 pro vs the 850 evo.

If something like that is worth it to you, go for it. If you are less likely to notice or care, save the cash.

With all due respect to Abanakfanatik I suggest one ignore the EVO at whatever price it is available. I have all three on three identical systems, or I used to have all three, until I replaced the EVO with another 850 PRO. The 850 PRO is the Samsung sweet spot IMHO. Goes like stink and for casual use I like it better than the 960 NMVe. Sorry but the EVO is a relative dog, though if your arriving here from an HDD, it is great. Relative to current devices, its not. Save your money to buy the 850 Pro or if the itch persists, the 960. But not the EVO.
