Intel => AMD cpu speed CONVERSION?

hi, i have a 2.4ghz pentium 4 no HT 533mhz FSB:

is there a way to determine my cpu's equivalent speed in AMD (a conversion factor?)

About like an XP2400...... A slug in todays world (sorry) But good for Internet, word processing, and encoding if you leave it overnight.... Games its OK, but will struggle with todays latest games...

No, there can't be any straight conversion factor, since these architectures are different and have different performance characteristics.

XP2400+ is probably not too bad overall comparision. But your 533FSB P4 probably has an edge in games.

I have one (rebuilt old 600MHz) XP2200+ and one old 2.4P4(400). XP2200+ feels quite nice to me. Could be due to its 32.2 in business Winstone 2002.

Your P4 should score something like 30, the XP2400+ scores 33.6.

But with it's media extensions, the P4 outperforms XPs in such apps. Content Creation 2003 scores are about 43 for the 2.4P4, against 36 for the 2400+. I would assume the difference is less in Winstone2004, but I don't have any scores for this.


Keep in mind that you can't even compare AMDs with AMDs. Semprons, A-XPs and A64s are all on three different performance ratings. Performance is highest for A64 and lowest for Sempron, for similar ratings.

Intel, same story or worse, with GHz. M > 6x0 > socket478 > 5x0 > P4B > P4 > "Deleron" >> Celeron.

Vee: according to your post, intel M is better than intel p4, so would an Inspiron 8600 with 1.6-1.8ghz pent M stack up well against my current cpu?

yes. very well. pentium III(which is basically a pentium m without wireless chip and power regulation) has much more ipc than p4 making up for the clock speed deficency. (just like the athlon vs p4)

a xp2400+ is comparable to p4
a a64 will outpower your cpu at the same speed rating ex. 2.8 and 2800+

It looks like the 2.4ghz P4 with a 533FSB is between the the AMD Athlon 2800+ T-Bred and 2600+ T-Bred.

the chart is obviously gpu limited so it's not a very good chart.
the difference between 4000+ and 2.4ghz is only 100pts. the gpu si limiting the true performance of the chips.

i mean it says the 3.2EE is SLOWER than the 2.4???

Don't know (but I suspect it is competitive cpu, but then there's the rest of the hardware). I just meant that if you compare them on GHz basis, P-M achieves better.
Same as if you compare AMD on rating, A64 achieves better.

But again, there is no straight conversion factor between P-M and P4 either. They too are different architectures. It depends on what type of application you run, and what code optimizations it feature.
