Intel Core i7-5775C ‘Broadwell’ overclocked to 5GHz with air cooling

Um, I wouldn't really call that a 5GHz overclock:

He then pushed the chip further to 5.0GHz with rather massive 1.419V core voltage and the system was stable enough to boot Windows and take a CPU-Z screenshot. At that frequency, the computer was not truly stable, according to Albertfu.

even booting at that speed is a relief.
How do we know it was booted at that speed? Personally, I've always booted at normal speeds and then test overclocks once the OS is up and running or post BIOS. Once the best settings are found then they can be applied to booting.

The WPrime scores are very good for the frequencies. Not sure what voltage was needed for 4.8GHz but perhaps their run on a Gigabyte board at 3.7GHz may give some indication that at least upwards of 1.4V would possibly be needed.

1.227V @ 37x (stock?)

Is Asus still the only manufacturer that has announced Broadwell support for their 9-series?

EDIT:

Oh, there's this:

http://techreport.com/news/28195/gigabyte-9-series-motherboards-are-broadwell-ready

Still I would feel better seeing the part numbers in the compatibility lists along with which BIOS is needed.

9-series motherboards were generally advertised as supporting 5th generation (Broadwell) CPU.

Still, ASRock also announced earlier this year:

http://asrock.com/news/index.asp?id=2708

BIOS updates are forthcoming.

That seems close to a promise of Broadwell compatibility, though it's not explicitly saying that they promise every board will have a new BIOS.

Maybe we will see these new BIOS versions popping up very soon in the compatibility charts.

Mostly all the big motherboard vendors have released updated BIOS's for Z97/broadwell compatibility weeks and weeks ago.

Plenty of Broadwells above 3Ghz..

Well, for base clocks, there's only i7-5557U (3.1 ghz). If you count turbo, then you get to add the i7-5650U, i7-5600U, i7-5550U, i7-5500U, i5-5287U, and i5-5257U. The absolute max clock on any of those is the turbo for the 5557U @ 3.4ghz.

Given the base clock on the i7-5775C is only 3.3 ghz, people were worried. Now we know that they need not show such concern.

Ok this is for benchmarking - something more practical maybe?

How will l4 affect gaming, code compilers, video encoding, vms etc.

Gaming will probably be an area where it helps out a good bit. Take a look at what large l3 cache can do for Haswell-E vs Haswell, for example. The eDRAM is slower than l3, but it's faster than system memory, so it'll help.

480 dollars for 5775c. No thank you.

I'm waiting for confirmation for price and overclock, and buying 4790k if true

I think 4790K is a no brainer . You know what to expect when it comes to OC and even at stock you get the highest x86 performance today.

The itch to buy is getting bigger but I'm trying to hold off for 2 more weeks when they show the numbers.
If you're buying from Silicon lottery 4.8ghz minimum with delidded chip.

I looked at Silicon Lottery and I'm at a loss at how these guys can run a reasonable business. They're selling pre-overclocked chips at retail price.

They can charge a premium for better than average over clockers, but they'll end up with plenty of below average over clockers as well.

That's what baffles me; they don't seem to be charging a premium to NIB retail chips for the 4.8GHz 4790Ks.

They are probably selling chips that came off of OEM trays.

btw who said it was going to be $480 for the i7-5775C? That's insane if true.
