Are we getting to a stage where HEDT and some of the lower core count Xeons will compete with one another? (aside from overclocking headroom?)

Strange how the D-1581 is a 100MHz faster @ 1.8GHz/2.4GHz than the D-1587 at 1.7GHz base and 2.3GHz turbo unless I'm missing something.

Another ES on sale @ eBay. Stepping A1.
The fastest Broadwell-EP (Xeon E5-2699 v4, 22C/44T @ 2.2GHz, 145W TDP) can be yours for 'only' $1750.

Vendor says it works on these motherboards:

The following is a non-exclusive list of compatible motherboards:

Do you guys think that the BW-E will clock better that the regular BW? I hope it clocks as well as Skylake and that 5GHz OEM SKU suggests that it can actually do that. If it could clock around 4.8GHz I would for sure grab 8C version if it wouldn't cost more than ~500$.

It's possible that it will clock better but there's no way to tell. The 5 Ghz models might actually make things worse since any chip that clocks that high will be saved for these offlabel Xeons.

The 8 core is $999.

Even if it clocks to 4.5, the 8 core version would sell very well at 500.00. Unfortunately didnt the early leaks indicate similar pricing to the current 5960x and the 10 core 1200?

I'd definitely buy an 8 core for $500. As it stands paying $400-450 for a 6 core likely with gimped PCI Express lanes is not incentive enough for me to upgrade from my 2600k build yet. I don't blame them for their pricing though.. enthusiasts have clearly shown they will pay large sums... anyone willing to pay $1000 for a 10 core will also pay $1500, so might as well charge that much.

Funny thing is that the Xeon E5-1620V3 was a Quad Core with nearly all the good LGA 2011-3 features (Except Core amount and Unlocked Multiplier, but at least had competitive stock Frequency and the 40 PCIe Lanes), costed around 300 U$D, yet I didn't saw people actually using it. I'm interesed on what would be the Broadwell-E entry level replacement for that little toy that was a serious sidegrade contender against the more expensive Ci7 5820K.

Some Broadwell-EP results:

Intel Xeon E5-2600 v4 HDEC Benchmarks

The Trenton HDEC Series® HEP8225 Single Board Computer is undergoing final validation testing in anticipation of availability of Intel’s new Xeon E5-2600 v4 series of processors, developed under the name Broadwell-EP. The goal of this document is to define anticipated performance of these new processors relative to each other. Additionally, Trenton’s engineering team has conducted an updated benchmark suite of the E5-2680 v3 (Haswell-EP) processor in order to demonstrate the anticipated performance differences between the two generations of processors, utilizing the SiSoft Sandra 2016 benchmarking suite.

Can't believe the 9.7-inch iPad Pro I'm gonna buy in a couple of weeks will have greater ST CPU perf (as measured by GB3) than a $4K Xeon o_o

Good thing GB3 and reality doesnt match in cross compare haha

Apple datacenters, now powered by A9S instead of Xeons!

I'm wondering if we will see a HEDT version of the >5Ghz Xeon. That seems like it would actually be a better choice for many gamers than a hex-core model, as there are still a lot of lightly threaded games out there.

Actually, as strange as it might sound considering we are talking about a CPU that costs 2.800$ it actually is a bargain compared to the outgoing model that retails for 7000$

Only 200MHz base frequency uplift at the cost of 10W higher TDP but the actual power consumption might be lower. But the price is more than 2x lower.
