NUC form factor is awesome, especially for casual users. We bought my mother a Broadwell i3 NUC as a kitchen PC. The small form factor is very convenient for her and the performance for what she does is more than enough.

There is a real market for these kinds of systems.

Dont they tend to have throttling issues though?

Just a note - even the desktop SKL CPUs just sip power.

With my G4400 in an Asus H110M-A mobo, powered by a 500W Antec EarthWatts 500 PSU (Delta, 80Plus), with one CPU core under load, I'm getting just under 60W load as measured by my CyberPower UPS software. With both cores relatively idle, I get 49W.

Those measurements are INCLUDING my 24" HDTV monitor. So subtract 25-30W for that, and you get the wattage of the PC. I have one SSD installed with Win7 64-bit.

My temps using RealTemp 3.70, show up as 40C under one-core load. Strangely, though, it says utilization is 18%, when Task Manager shows 76%. I wish I could understand that discrepancy.

Did you get a Displayport to Hdmi 2.0 adapter for your NUC yet? If so which one?
I just ordered the NUC6i3SYH, Samsung 850 EVO 250GB, and 2x8GB G. Skill Ripjaws SO-DIMM 2133

Not yet, I will get that later. I will just get the Club 3D one since I can see it listed. And also know its the correct one

Nobody will have it in stock before sometimes next year.

Cute little computer! What's the noise like under load?

After running benches, I can tell there is no noise really. Its like a laptop in idle mode type of noise. but the higher models like the i5 with GT3e and turbo may be different tho. But this 6100U run just cool and silent.

It's funny, I can see gigabyte z170 boards with integrated HDMI 2.0 support, no need to use fancy adapters. That NUC of yours should have got one as well

Biostar BCLK overclocking support now official.

More here.

Microsoft and Intel bring ‘Speed Shift’ technology to Windows 10 this Fall

Apparently, ‘Speed Shift’ was a technology that was announced early on in Skylake’s roadmap, but without OS support for it, the technology was overlooked, if not forgotten entirely until now. Fortunately, Microsoft and Intel worked together to bring the technology up to speed (pun intended).

Even though Microsoft and Intel’s efforts have gotten ‘Speed Shift’ ready and primed, the technology is still not available to Windows users with Skylake processors. Microsoft’s Fall update to Windows 10 is said to include a patch to enable ‘Speed Shift’ for PCs housing Skylake processors.

Asus' E3 Pro Gaming V5 mobo lets Xeons get their game on

If you want to fuel your productivity with a Xeon E3-1200 v5 processor without also sacrificing your gaming thrills, Asus has a Christmas gift for you: the E3 Pro Gaming V5 motherboard. Asus designed this board around Intel’s workstation-oriented C232 Express chipset, but this isn’t your typical business mobo.

To start, Asus says it tricked out this board's signal chain with a beefed-up headphone amplifier, premium capacitors, and some extra EMI shielding that might keep analog audio cleaner. Also included is Sonic Radar II, an in-game overlay application that can show the direction of sounds like gunshots and sneaking enemies. Those features will be familiar to anyone who's a fan of Asus' Republic of Gamers motherboards.

The E3 Pro Gaming V5 comes with an Intel Gigabit Ethernet controller whose port is shielded against power surges. This board can accept up to 64GB of DDR4-2133 RAM, and its M.2 slot lets builders install PCIe SSDs. USB 3.1 Type A and C ports let users connect next-gen peripherals. This motherboard sports a mean-looking red and black color scheme, too...

And yes, C232 does support BCLK overclocking too.

It requires the Thunderbolt LSPCon. So a big reason for it not to have it
Yeah, it seems like HDMI 2.0 is really a premium feature here. For an existing iGPU desktop user, it's really more cost-effective to pick up a used Maxwell GPU than to go with a new build. Only the more expensive 1151 boards (in the territory of X99) offer HDMI 2.0 out of the box. Way to go, Intel. Let us know how this adapter works. Thanks.

Congrats on your new toy

Can anyone confirm if 1.5v ddr3 1333 could work with the GIGABYTE GA-H110M-S2PV if i paired it up with like a G4500.I know 1.35v is the normal but has 1.5v been paired with no damage before or would the cpu just burn up?Does the motherboard at least offer options to lower the voltage?

I may end up with this platform, will fall short on the budget for memory but i got a 4gb stick of kingston hyper x 1333mhz 1.5 that i want to pair with it.

Here's a list of compatible RAM. It is validated to work with many 1.5V kits.

Note that: *Memory modules listed as above is for reference only. Due to massive memory models in market, we can only verify some of them.

Pentium G4500 would be a nice choice, check these performance tests.

I think we will see more DP options on new TVs

I will let you know how it works, whenever it actually materializes in shops. Could be as late as February tho.

Overclocked Core i5-6600 matches Core i5-6600K performance @ equal clocks but draws less power under load? Interesting.

Core i3-6100 looks like a killer chip (both stock and overclocked). Managed to beat OCed FX6300 in all gaming tests and comes awfully close in highly-MT applications, all at much lower power. Really hard to justify Vishera right now.

Vishera is DOA now. Like SB, they need to go to retirement. Seems that SKL finally manages to transform into a decent choice.

However is a bad news for the K chips since the BLCK OC seems to be superior than the full unlocked OC. That is the very first time that this kind of OC is superior than the full one.

Those results are very strange, and contradict the pclab.pl ones which show a 6400@4.5 drawing essentially the same (or a hair more) power as a 6600k@4.5

I don't see my model listed but it is Kingston and i have yet to have had any motherboard not work with Kingston. It is always my pick most of the time as it just seems to always be compatible.Never had a stick go out either since 2006 and my first pc build.

The motherboard simply drops the voltage and timing settings? It does look like it supports 1866 which i assume is the default support for chips like the G4500 upwards to maybe the i3?Guessing the DDR4 based motherboards are for overclocking i5 chips?

I know little about Skylake as i am content with my i5 2500 but my wife is wanting a build and now i am getting interested.

You don't happen to have an AMEX card, do you? They have a $20 statement credit when you spend $50 or more at Jet.com

$140 would be a hair more than your planned $130 for CPU+MB+PSU, but this also would be with 8GB of DDR4.

It's Gigabyte's time.

Thanks to Stasio, a dedicated forum member who shared the beta BIOSes in our Z170 BIOS thread, you can test the GIGABYTE non-K OC on 7 Z170 motherboards. The list includes: Z170X-SOC Force (F6c), Z170X-Gaming G1 (F7a), Z170X-Gaming GT (F6a), Z170X-Gaming 7 (F6), Z170X-Gaming 7 (F7a), Z170X-Gaming 3 (F5g) and Z170-HD3P (F5g).

http://hwbot.org/newsflash/3289_gig..._k_skylake_overclockable_on_z170_motherboards

Now the big three (ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI) are supporting BCLK overclocking.

Locked Intel CPUs can be unofficially overclocked
Digital Foundry pushes Skylake Core i3 and Core i5 processors to 4.4GHz and beyond.

It's safe to say that we've been highly impressed with Intel's Skylake line of processors - architectural advantages along with higher memory bandwidth are producing big gains over established processors. There's just one problem. The best Skylake chips - the overclockable Core i5 6600K and Core i7 6700K - have availability issues, meaning that prices have skyrocketed. However, that may change now that every Skylake chip is overclockable on select motherboards, and the results can be extraordinary. Is this an actual Christmas miracle?

...The end results are fascinating. The Core i3 6100 at 4.44GHz paired with 2666MHz modules produces a noticeable uplift, to the point where our gaming benchmarks actually see the dual-core chip outperform non-overclocked Core i5 2500K and 3570K processors paired with standard (for their time) 1600MHz RAM. It makes one of the very best budget gaming CPUs on the market even better, but there are some curious results. For example, there's no uplift at all on The Witcher 3, despite the test taking place in a highly CPU-bound area. We can't help but feel that our low RAM multiplier might be causing issues there, but on the flipside, it's highly unlikely that a budget i3 would be paired with anything faster...
