Near the end of the show...both Microsoft and Intel have large plants in Haifa (Intel's is 2000 employees).
IIRC, this is where the majority of work on Conroe was done...

why couldn't these guys build these plants in the USA and employ 2000 Americans?? plus we're the ones propping up Israel with our tax money, it's coming back to bite the hand it feeds taking away jobs Americans could be doing.

It makes you wonder what advantages to working in Isreal there are that outweigh the security concerns.

Not sure how you figure that... it's not like Israel started this conflict. Now if we'd had an American company place factories in a country that started wars and then came under attack then maybe you'd have a point, but alas you don't.

You still have to admit Isreal is inherantly a less secure place than say any country in north america, and has been so for a long time.

The design center has been relocated to a bombshelter with Wi Fi connections. The design center employees are most definately working and probably accomplishing more then their American counterparts..

Intel Israel's achievements include (among many others):
the 8088 processor
MMX technology
Coppermine chip
Centrino technology
Yonah chip
Dothan chip
and of course conroe!

here's some more stuff about/made in israel:

Agriculture
The average palm tree, which has been growing in the Middle East for centuries, is about 18-20 feet tall and yields about 38 pounds of dates a year. Israeli date trees are now yielding 400 pounds/year and are short enough to be harvested from the ground or a short ladder.
Israel is the only country in the world that entered the 21st century with a net gain in its number of trees. This gain was achieved in an area considered mainly desert.

Hi-Tech
The cell phone was developed by Israelis working in the Israeli branch of Motorola.
Most of the Windows NT and XP operating systems were developed by Microsoft-Israel.
The Pentium MMX Chip technology was designed in Israel at Intel.
Both the Pentium-4 microprocessor and the Centrino processor were entirely designed, developed and produced in Israel.
Voice mail technology was developed in Israel.
Both Microsoft and Cisco built their only R&D facilities outside the US in Israel.
The technology for the AOL Instant Messenger ICQ was developed by four young Israelis.
With more than 3,000 high-tech companies, Israel has the highest concentration of hi-tech companies in the world (apart from Silicon Valley).

Medicine
Israeli scientists developed the first fully computerized, no-radiation, diagnostic instrumentation for breast cancer.
An Israeli company developed a computerized system for ensuring proper administration of medications, thus removing human error from medical treatment. 7,000 patients a year die from treatment mistakes in U.S. hospitals.
Israelis developed the first ingestible video camera (so small it fits inside a pill) used to view the small intestine from the inside.
Israeli researchers developed a device that helps the heart pump blood and has the potential to save the lives of those with heart failure.
Clear Light, a new acne treatment developed in Israel, produces a light that kills acne bacteria without damaging surrounding skin or tissue.

Military
Israel has the fourth largest air force in the world (after the U.S, Russia and China).

Economy
Israel's $100 billion economy is larger than all of its immediate neighbors combined.
Israel is ranked #2 in the world for venture capital funds (behind the U. S.) Outside the U.S. and Canada, Israel has the largest number of NASDAQ listed companies.
Israel has the highest average living standards in the Middle East.
The per capita income in 2000 was over $17,500, exceeding that of the UK.
Education and Research
Israel has the highest percentage in the world of home computers per capita.
Israel has the highest ratio of university degrees to the population in the world.
Twenty-four per cent of Israel's workforce holds university degrees, ranking third in the industrialized world, after the United States and Holland and 12 per cent hold advanced degrees.
On a per capita basis, Israel has the largest number of biotech startups.
Israel produces more scientific papers per capita than any other nation by a large margin - 109 per 10,000 people --as well as one of the highest per capita rates of patents filed.

Innovation
In proportion to its population, Israel has the largest number of start-up companies in the world. In absolute terms, Israel has the largest number of start-up companies than any other country in the world, except the U.S.
An Israeli company was the first to develop and install a large-scale, solar-powered electricity generating plant.
Israel designed the airline industry's most impenetrable flight security.
Israel has the third highest rate of entrepreneurship -- and the highest rate among women and among people over 55 - in the world.
Israel leads the world in the number of scientists and technicians in the workforce, with 145 per 10,000, as opposed to 85 in the U. S., over 70 in Japan. With over 25% of its work force employed in technical professions. Israel places first in this category as well.

Thriving Democracy
Israel is the only liberal democracy in the Middle East.
In 1984 and 1991, Israel airlifted a total of 22,000 Ethiopian Jews (Operation Solomon) at Risk in Ethiopia, to safety in Israel.
When Golda Meir was elected Prime Minister of Israel in 1969, she became the world's second elected female leader in modern times.
Relative to its population, Israel is the largest immigrant-absorbing nation on earth. Immigrants come in search of democracy, religious freedom, and economic opportunity.
Israel has the world's second highest per capita of new books.
Israel has more museums per capita than any other country.
Israel achieved all of the above accomplishments despite being continually at war with neighboring countries that seek her destruction and having to spend more per capita on security than any other county on earth

Gentlemen, gentlemen - let's keep the politics in P&N, shall we?

Anyways, yeah, I also heard that they're currently working inside a fortified building/bunker. I also wouldn't be surprised to hear some folks are teleworking while staying with family members in the south, too - in today's highly networked environment, there's no excuse for not being able to work from home in a lot of circumstances.

Maybe because Israeli Engineers were able to develop a chip Americans couldn't? It is widely recognized the Core 2 Duo was the brainchild and work of the Israeli development team.

And it isn't fair to criticize Intel for their overseas affairs. AMD does the same thing.

I believe the NPR story is misleading. Intel has 5 different locations within Israel: Haifa, Jerusalem, Petach Tikva, Yakum, and Qiryat Gat.

Intel's Israel Development Center (IDC) is in Haifa and they are working underground using Wifi. This facility has over 2,000 employees.

Intel has an older fab in Jerusalem (Fab 8), which produces a variety of products on older process technology.

Intel's largest facility is their Fab 18 in Qiryat Gat. Qiryat Gat is much further to the south, out of the range of any Hezbollah rocket. The fab has over 2,000 people (i've read upto 3,700 people) working at it. This facility is crucial to Intel's operation as they produce 90nm P4s, chipsets, and flash memory.

Overview
Intel Israel

I do not understand why they used the word "plant" in the broadcast because there is no Intel plant in Haifa. They have a design center, which can operate under the current conditions. My guess is that Intel is one of the largest US employers in Israel and so they needed to use Intel to show the severity of the impact. By using the word "plant", NPR implies that Intel can no longer produce products in Israel, which is simply not true. With that being said, Intel Israel has been around for a long time (est. 5 yrs. after Intel's est.) and has always produced good results, so I don't believe that another conflict for Israel will stop them now.

to be exact Intel opened it's first branch in Israel in 1974, 6 years after Intel was founded

It's unfair to say the oregon team can't develop something like merom, the decision was made to have intel oregon work with the P4 family. But since P4 is dead, that is no longer an issue.

They were built in Israel because they are a massive tech. center that rivals Silicon Valley and as far as jobs are concerned they buy huge volumes of chips from the U.S. so while they may be "taking" a few jobs from America the revenue that trade generates creates more jobs here in America.

Let me put it like this, either Intel will employ them and the profits will go to Intel which is an American company owned by Americans and thus the profits go to America or a rival will employ these people and the American Intel will loss money to them. These aren't factory workers that can be readily replaced they are brilliant inventors that will always have an employer and I would rather an American company profit from them. Plus we sell so many chips to Israel that it only seems fair that we have a division in their country.
