It's unfair to say the oregon team can't develop something like merom, the decision was made to have intel oregon work with the P4 family. But since P4 is dead, that is no longer an issue.

The Oregon design team produced Prescott. (a day late, a dollar short, and one of Intel's worst ever CPU embarresments).

Meanwhile everything the IDC team comes up with seems to turn to gold.

If you were Otellini which team would you entrust with the future of Intel's architecture?

Guys, let's also not forget the real reason: They'd run out of river names in the Pacific Northwest!

what would be gained by bringing over israeli engineers? the same people who are unemployed in the states will still be unemployed, not to mention that most israelis are very idealistic about living in israel and would not necesarily move to america, then a competitor would just hire those same people as Kwint Sommer said

here's some more stuff about/made in israel:

Agriculture
The average palm tree, which has been growing in the Middle East for centuries, is about 18-20 feet tall and yields about 38 pounds of dates a year. Israeli date trees are now yielding 400 pounds/year and are short enough to be harvested from the ground or a short ladder.
Israel is the only country in the world that entered the 21st century with a net gain in its number of trees. This gain was achieved in an area considered mainly desert.

Hi-Tech
The cell phone was developed by Israelis working in the Israeli branch of Motorola.
Most of the Windows NT and XP operating systems were developed by Microsoft-Israel.
The Pentium MMX Chip technology was designed in Israel at Intel.
Both the Pentium-4 microprocessor and the Centrino processor were entirely designed, developed and produced in Israel.
Voice mail technology was developed in Israel.
Both Microsoft and Cisco built their only R&D facilities outside the US in Israel.
The technology for the AOL Instant Messenger ICQ was developed by four young Israelis.
With more than 3,000 high-tech companies, Israel has the highest concentration of hi-tech companies in the world (apart from Silicon Valley).

Medicine
Israeli scientists developed the first fully computerized, no-radiation, diagnostic instrumentation for breast cancer.
An Israeli company developed a computerized system for ensuring proper administration of medications, thus removing human error from medical treatment. 7,000 patients a year die from treatment mistakes in U.S. hospitals.
Israelis developed the first ingestible video camera (so small it fits inside a pill) used to view the small intestine from the inside.
Israeli researchers developed a device that helps the heart pump blood and has the potential to save the lives of those with heart failure.
Clear Light, a new acne treatment developed in Israel, produces a light that kills acne bacteria without damaging surrounding skin or tissue.

Military
Israel has the fourth largest air force in the world (after the U.S, Russia and China).

Economy
Israel's $100 billion economy is larger than all of its immediate neighbors combined.
Israel is ranked #2 in the world for venture capital funds (behind the U. S.) Outside the U.S. and Canada, Israel has the largest number of NASDAQ listed companies.
Israel has the highest average living standards in the Middle East.
The per capita income in 2000 was over $17,500, exceeding that of the UK.
Education and Research
Israel has the highest percentage in the world of home computers per capita.
Israel has the highest ratio of university degrees to the population in the world.
Twenty-four per cent of Israel's workforce holds university degrees, ranking third in the industrialized world, after the United States and Holland and 12 per cent hold advanced degrees.
On a per capita basis, Israel has the largest number of biotech startups.
Israel produces more scientific papers per capita than any other nation by a large margin - 109 per 10,000 people --as well as one of the highest per capita rates of patents filed.

Innovation
In proportion to its population, Israel has the largest number of start-up companies in the world. In absolute terms, Israel has the largest number of start-up companies than any other country in the world, except the U.S.
An Israeli company was the first to develop and install a large-scale, solar-powered electricity generating plant.
Israel designed the airline industry's most impenetrable flight security.
Israel has the third highest rate of entrepreneurship -- and the highest rate among women and among people over 55 - in the world.
Israel leads the world in the number of scientists and technicians in the workforce, with 145 per 10,000, as opposed to 85 in the U. S., over 70 in Japan. With over 25% of its work force employed in technical professions. Israel places first in this category as well.

Thriving Democracy
Israel is the only liberal democracy in the Middle East.
In 1984 and 1991, Israel airlifted a total of 22,000 Ethiopian Jews (Operation Solomon) at Risk in Ethiopia, to safety in Israel.
When Golda Meir was elected Prime Minister of Israel in 1969, she became the world's second elected female leader in modern times.
Relative to its population, Israel is the largest immigrant-absorbing nation on earth. Immigrants come in search of democracy, religious freedom, and economic opportunity.
Israel has the world's second highest per capita of new books.
Israel has more museums per capita than any other country.
Israel achieved all of the above accomplishments despite being continually at war with neighboring countries that seek her destruction and having to spend more per capita on security than any other county on earth

And one misplaced bomb, 37 children dead. among others. Now do a google search for Israel dirty deeds. And, this does belong in P&N.

so the american army (or any other army for that matter) has never missed a target?
Why do you hold Israel to a higher moral standard than any other country?
The Israeli army happens to be one of the most moral armies in the world and the proof of that is that they don't level villages in south lebanon but rather risks the lives of it's own troops by sending them in to weed out the terrorists from among the civilians.

If you would like to continue this in P&N then make a thread and PM me

I'm surprised i'm having to make these arguments on an American forum?? or is everyone an Israeli shill these days?

I see what side you lean towards....maybe if the gutless pukes called Hezbollah would not dress as civilians and launch their rockets from residential rooftops and neighborhoods using their own people as shields it would not happen....The only one to blame here is Hezbollah....

You keep listening to the looney left in the news media keys...To them every person killed in Lebanon is an innocent civilian...Honestly how can they tell except for the children. The people in southern Lebanon are fully supportive of Hezbollah...how do you get 14 parliamentary members elected?? Duh!!!!!!

I feel no sympathy. Israel as a right to defend itself. Unlike their arab counterparts they are not coward enough to use their own people's bodies as shields and ultimately for political tools when they are dead...

The comment sounds like Anti-Semitism....Just like the news media's coverage, which reeks of it....

Off to P&N with this thread....

Doesn't matter where the Conroe was designed... it is being produced in multiple factories in multiple places.

My guess would be that that Malaysian and Costa Rican Intel facilities will be the main chip producing plants so the misguided hopes of the AMD fans simply aren't gonna change the release of the Conroes.

One screwup kills a team? Guess IDC should've packed up in the 80's.

You have no idea the kind of challenges handled by the oregon team with prescott design (which was foisted onto design by management to begin with), so don't insult the engineering team on issues you are totally clueless about.

Does anybody froget about Northwood or does their utter hatred for Netburst ruin what was a very popular and dominant chip of its time???

pepole dont make this into an American worker versus everyone else....Many peope in Intels Oregon Development team are of other nationalities... Do you want to insult them as well?

I'd like to clarify my previous comment in this thread. My point was that it was the Israeli development team that put Conroe together. Nothing more, nothing less. I have no doubt that Oregon could put together a monster as well, just Conroe wasn't theirs.

I say lock this thread down tight. There's no need for the political bickering here. P&N is open for that.

The marketing department took over the design team, not the engineers fault. Some principled even quit over it.

Ok Duvie, you can STFU now. I am well aware that all we are going to hear from news rooms is propaganda. People are dying and people are lying. My comment was to the guy who was painting Israel such a rosy color. Those nations have been at war since time began. And it won't stop til they're all dead or can't reproduce anymore. Sick as hell.

Please lock this thread turned stink bomb.

You're funny Zebo. How the hell do you know that the "evidence" was not manufactured as well? Geez. Look at what you're saying. And you act as if these are my accusations. I only know what I read in the newspapers my friend. Don't be so smug.

I'm complaining that 37 children were killed. Who did it? Nobody truly knows. Newspapers say Israel did last time I checked. I am on neither side Duvie. If anything, I'm on the side of the children. Take back what you said.

Meanwhile everything the IDC team comes up with seems to turn to gold.

If you were Otellini which team would you entrust with the future of Intel's architecture?

One screwup kills a team? Guess IDC should've packed up in the 80's.

You have no idea the kind of challenges handled by the oregon team with prescott design (which was foisted onto design by management to begin with), so don't insult the engineering team on issues you are totally clueless about.

Does anybody froget about Northwood or does their utter hatred for Netburst ruin what was a very popular and dominant chip of its time???

pepole dont make this into an American worker versus everyone else....Many peope in Intels Oregon Development team are of other nationalities... Do you want to insult them as well?
Hey, I still run a Northwood and it's been a fine cpu.

dmens nailed it when he pointed out the pressures put on the Oregon team to work with what they were given and determined by management.

CPU core architectures are not rewritten overnight nor written by one or two people. And it's not simple enough to say "Israeli engineers are better" because Intel is truly a global corporation and a guy from Israel is just as likely to be working in Oregon's engineering division and vice versa.
