So I have an old SB Live! Platinum that I want to continue making the most of... that old Live! Drive that came with it is collecting dust and I need to use it with my new X-Fi Xtreme Music card. It's not compatible straight-up but wiring them up appropriately is still possible to, at least, gain additional audio I/O. It saves me some cash and I don't have to shell out US$230 for an external I/O console.
As I'm sure you've seen inside of various computer systems as well as inside of your own, those wirings that connect to the front panel of your computers like power, reset, HD LEDs, USB, firewire, and so forth. This idea I have is to get a bunch of single or dual wires and hook these manually from the X-Fi to the Live! Drive.
Another method is to use an old 40-pin IDE cable and hack up the ribbon to hell.
Another is to create your own adapter... which will most likely require soldering as well as trying to create your own PCB and traces.
Either of the aforementioned methods is something I do not mind doing... I know this'll take some good time... however, two of the three I've mentioned needs a place to acquire materials/supplies in order to get started. If you know of some store that sell something like these in the US, I'd appreciate it. Hacking up an old 40-wire IDE cable isn't my idea of getting this thing to work and I would like to avoid that as a last resort. Much thanks to anyone who can provide me with the good links.
