internet problems

recently I have been unable to go on specific sites like sears.com eagames.com. I have already checked with other computers and they seem to work fine. I don't think this is a browser issue because I have tried several and had the same results on my computer. I have ran Norton and Spybot and now I just don't know what to do anymore. Can anyone here please help? Appreciate it.

What kind of error do you get? How do you connect to the internet?

i just get the basic "cannot display page". im running through the router a linksys. i tried going to those sites on my other computer and it works fine. i just can't go on my computer. my settings should be fine too. im accepting all cookies and my trusted zone settings are low.

Try clearing your Internet cache.

i already cleared the cache through IE and it still doesn't work. i want to fix this without having to fresh install windows.

You might try one of the repairs shown on this page. They have worked for me numerous times.

nope. it is still a no go. i have done just about everything. i think i may need to reinstall windows but i'll wait for more suggestions. appreciate it though!

Have you tried using another browser, see if it works then?

yup tried that too. instead of IE i tried using Mozilla and it's a no go.

Did you download any programs/hacks/fixes that may have updated your HOSTS file?

Kazaa has some hacks available that allow you to replace your Hosts file to eliminate some pop-up windows, etc. You may be re-directing those sites to 127.0.0.1, which in turn will result in your PAGE CAN NOT BE DISPLAYED error message.

Open your HOSTS file with Notepad and see if you see anything. the file is located:

C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS
(or something similar, depending on the operating system--you may want to do a file search and find it on YOUR system)

i replaced the hosts file and it solved some of the problems but not all. it's weird since i stopped using kazaa like since 2002. i don't have any other file-sharing programs and this problem started happening like 2 weeks ago. but all and all thanks for the temporary fix, now all i have to do is find a good HOSTS file.

For the most part, I believe the HOSTS file is usually pretty empty. You can try to clean out everything but the default stuff from microsoft and see if this corrects the rest of the issues. You can probaby get a copy of HOSTS from the OS media (XP CD-Rom, etc.) Good luck!

I'm voting for a hijacked hosts file. I've seen where your registry gets edited and points to a bogus host file instead of the real one. Search for hosts on your computer and see if it finds 2 host files.
