Intrusion Detection vs Web Sense

On Monday one of my coworker's return's from Intrusion Detection software training where he has been the entire week. Now I'm not certain what the name of the software really is due to the fact that if you google Intrusion Detection Software you get a plythera of choices. However, I do know that it is replacing our WebSense software which we were delinquint in paying and is to perform similarly. I know it has filtering capabilities for porn and most likely games but don't know about forums.

Wish me luck in that I will be able to continue wasting my day online posting in ATOT as oppose to actually getting work done and earning my keep so to speak.

We have WebSense here too. Real annoying piece of crap.
It's too bad these forums couldn't change their name to something else and get rid of "forum" in the address altogether. Make it "talkarea" or something obscure.

Intrusion detection is exactly what it sounds like and I don't think it's really connected to Websense or monitoring user activities...

IDS software is wholly different from Websense.

Intrusion Detection Software is designed to test whether or not someone is attempting to get into your network by "non-standard" methods. It's entire purpose is to take snapshots of your network activity and determine exactly what could be considered "dangerous".

Websense on the other hand is content filtering software. It simply filters out the web content that your employer doesn't want you to visit using their bandwidth. It does not serve as a security measure so much as IDS software does, although it is a component of a good security architecture.

The classic work around is using babelfish to view pages. I think anybody who had internet in highschool knows how to do that.

Of course my work blocks those, though it's not like I'd ever need to use them anyway.

I always used google\babelfish to view sites (not porn) banned by work. Noone was any the wiser either.
Also useful for viewing forums from which you are banned. Not that I would have any experience from that
