IP Address Forwarding or Masking

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone had a solution for the below problem:

My work blocks many websites and IP addresses through our Firewall. We have an ISA firewall client loaded on all workstations.

My home computer sits on a 24.X.X.X Cable Modem. It looks like we block all of the 24.X range, as I cannot ping my router while at work.

My question is this - Can I use some sort of domain forwarding, or some other product to mask my home IP address? I would like to either VPN in to my home network, or connect to a webserver on my home machine.

Ideally, I would like to use a domain forwarding service where I can connect at work to foo.com and that be some other ip address, and then that service connect to the 24.X address.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks

so, you are trying to bypass your work's security? Wow, hope you got a fire proof suit....

I would be prone to agree that it is not a good idea to curcimvent your work's security rules. The next question, are you sure your firewall even lets a ping out? The one I maintain is set to not allow them out, or respond to one if a request is present. Try pinging something like google.com, if you get no response, then your work firewall is set in the same manner. Then are you sure YOUR router responds to a ping? By default the one I have at home (some cheap dlink i think) was shipped with the setting of ignore PING command checked.

If you can get a ping to google, you can do a tracert -ip number- and see where your connection stops. It is unual to block all traffic in a range such as that, since there are so many different carriers you can unintentionally block the wrong people.

Next, as for VPNs, I do not allow any VPNs in, and the only ones that work are the ones that were created by us and any others will not authenticate properly, so VPNs might be out.

As for a web, you could try a proxy like stupidcensorship.com or something like that, but even that is pretty easy to block too.

I you really need it, I would say just talk to your IT team, and if you don't want to talk to them about it, then you are most likely leeching bandwith and/or other things that you shouldn't be doing while working.

Tsaico,

Thanks for the good information.

I am not planning on connecting in to home from work very often, but I previously had a vpn setup that I could connect from other networks. A few other employees use a different ISP and have been able to use Remote Desktop to connect to their home PCs. Therefore, I don?t think there is necessarily a policy in place that prevents this, but as I do not have a valid business reason for bringing this up to IT, I would not want to bother asking to make an exception for me.

I was not aware of networks blocking outgoing pings altogether. I will be sure to try your suggestion.

I don't want to go out of the way to circumvent my network's security but was wondering if this was a commonly setup item, as it is that time of year to renew my domains anyway.

I will probably just live without connecting from work.

Thanks much for your insight.
