I just had an idea: Maybe the 5C isn't for today.

Think about it, Apple could be in emerging markets today if it still sold the iPhone 4 or 3GS at even LOWER price points.

Maybe the 5C's purpose is to hang around long enough and be cheap enough to build to create a new rung on the iPhone ladder in two years. PS3 all over again.

Boom. And there you have it.

VERY good observation.

I mean, anyone remember how guys would put Apple logos on their...dell laptops?

Anyways, I kind of like the 5c and the colors. And the plastic body especially would be nicer to hold I think. I'm actually not a fan of the sharp corners of most Apple phones. It sucks holding it.

I agree about the sharp corners but most people use cases. Also the 5C is heavier than the 5/5S. Some people don't care but I personally prefer a lighter phone when possible. I'm not in the 'I like a little weight' pool.

Ha ha, that was hilarious.

He was right about everything, of course. Especially Shaq not fitting in that car, lol.

This generation of iPhones might not be Apple's death knell, but it sure makes for comedy gold. Nearly all of Apple's competitors are attacking it, and even Denny's is making fun (it's a good marketing opportunity for them, of course).

I'm thinking that the 5C is really targeted at teenagers with wealthy parents. Those kids would be attracted to a brightly colored version of an Apple phone like their parents and friends have.

This plan wouldn't work on me or my kid, though... She'll be getting my hand me down smartphones so I can get a new one

I'm with you bro my kids are always combining that they don't get new phones, I tell them all the time when you can pay the bill you can get the upgrade

A lot of Apple envy.

I think Apple could really have used Steve Jobs' salesmanship here. WTF is with there not being any video streams of the unveiling? That's definitely a first.

Like, the fingerprint scanner alone would have been perfect for Jobs explaining how awesome it was. Like the way he explained that pirating music is stupid b/c you spend so much time at pretty much less than min wage.

Apple actually stopped streaming events live for years; they only recently picked back up, and it's somewhat intermittent. I think the absence of streaming was due more to the venue (Apple's campus town hall isn't really great for live streams) and the to-the-point nature of the event itself. If the October event is held at the Yerba Buena Center or something otherwise more theatrical, there's a real chance you'll get a stream.

As for the iPhone 5c? Simply put, it's there to jazz up the mid-range. You're not just buying last year's phone; you're buying something that stands out. Yes, there are faster or bigger-screened phones in that range, but the iPhone 5/5c is still very quick and has an exceptional camera. If you're buying on contract and don't demand cutting edge hardware, it 's very tempting.

Does anyone know the price of the 5s off contract (CDMA version) I can't find it anywhere.

Same as all the other variants. $650/$750/$850 depending on memory size. Probably have to go through the carrier to get it. Apply typically doesn't sell off contract for a couple of months after release.

Oh, thats not that bad. I feared the worst and thought they'd sell them for like 750 for the lowest memory size or something.

Boom. And there you have it.

Not really. Again, the price of the iPhone 5C has not changed compared to what the iPhone 4S was selling for for the past year.

The iPhone 5C is Apple making the iPhone 5 cheaper to make not for you to buy. :whiste:

Re: Specs:

To my surprise, iOS 7 lags much less on my iphone 4 than Android Jelly Bean 4.1 does on my RAZR HD.

iPhone 4 - Single-core 0.8 GHz, 512 MB RAM
RAZR HD - Dual-core 1.5 GHz, 1 GB RAM. So almost 4X the GHz and 2X the RAM and it still lags more.

Even the Photo Collections view is fast on the iPhone 4. I'm shocked.

iOS 7 should absolutely fly on the 5S.

I will say though that the iPhone 4 does lag more than than the Nexus 7 Tegra 3 with Jelly Bean 4.3, but that thing is quad-core 6X the GHz, at 1.2 GHz x 4.

I know that GHz and IPC can't be compared directly like that, but perhaps that's part of the point. It's more than just raw specs.

Is there a good spreadsheet/link to a comparison of the iPhone 5c/5s battery life compared to both previous iPhones (4/4s) and current Android devices?

Yeah that is my point. Next iPhone release and the 4S is gone.

I predict two years from now the 5c will exist as a lower rung than the 4S today.

The Nexus 7 doesn't run smoother because it has Tegra 3, it runs smoother because it runs stock Android. Your RAZR HD likely doesn't.

It shouldn't come as a surprise to people that Google is every bit as competent as Apple at making a fast, fluid, mobile OS. If you buy a phone or tablet that has Google's fingerprints on it (Nexus anything, Moto X, or a HTC One/GS4 Google Play Edition), you'll get a fast, fluid experience.

That's not to say your manufacturer/carrier-bloated handset is beyond hope. If the lag is mostly in the launcher, try replacing it with something faster (Nova Launcher is a good example).

The RAZR HD is near-stock. You should have a look at the OS some time, because it's nothing like the reports of the bloated Motoblur of the past. While the RAZR HD was likely in development before Google bought Motorola, it was released (2012-10) over a year after Google bought Motorola (2011-08).

However, the OS version on the RAZR is 4.1. So, no TRIM available. Mind you there is no TRIM for the Moto X either, since it runs 4.2.

Yeah, that's a cogent point.

Like, IIRC, they've discontinued production of the ipad 3, but are still making the ipad 2, right? So the 5c would be like their ipad 2.

The iPad 2 is two steps below the 5C IMO. I expect the iPad 2 to be discontinued next month. Also, I expect the furthest the iPad 2 will go iOS-wise is iOS 8, just like the iPhone 4S, if we're lucky.

I expect the 5C to get up to at least iOS 9 (since it has a much faster CPU and likely 1 GB RAM).

Then at some point there will be hard cutoff for iOS updates for the iPhone 5 and 5C. At that point (iOS 10?), Apple will likely require 64-bit, which means iPhone 5S.
