Was that Nokia or 3rd party though. That's back in 1998 so I think it's safe to say that Apple didn't come up with it.

Honestly can't remember, I do remember that you could get replacement covers everywhere and in just about every colour and/or pattern.

Heh. I still have that guy's big brother. That was the Nokia 5190, and I had the 6190 back in the 90s. It's still sitting in my closet.

Note though that just about everyone's 5190 and 6190 were black. You had to swap the faceplate to change the colour. I put a custom metallic silver faceplate on my 6190.

That Nokia phone was ubiquitous. I had one and played snake on it like crazy. That being said I do remember there were 3rd party covers everywhere.

Are we really arguing that apple started the multiple colors for a product? Who cares?

What we can state as a fact is that Apple has consistently done multiple colors for a product dating back a long time. iPods, iMacs and I even remember an old ass laptop that was in a bunch of different color options. I don't think it matters who started that trend. I think we can look to the past and see that Apple has been doing this to their products for the better part of a decade or two.

the AzN community riced out their 6190's with custom faceplates and flashing antennas. it was the only logical thing to do.

Are we seriously concerned about who released multiple colors when?

I was just correcting the point that Apple were the first for coloured electronics.
I don't think it matters who was first at all, I just get slightly irritated about a certain type of revisionism that says Apple did everything first.

Here are my thoughts on the iPhone 5C:

The 5C is the first fully produced Jony Ive phone. He (and Apple as a whole) always talk about the seamless integration of the hardware and the software. Most of you on this forum like to call it the 'walled garden'. Jony had heavy influence over iOS 7. The 5C is just the hardware interpretation of iOS 7. He wants the hardware to be a mirror of the software. The 5C wallpaper will even ship with the same color as the phone itself. I think he wielded Steve Jobs like power over the complete design of it. You can tell from the product videos and the way he talks about it that the 5C is his baby.

The 5C is not for me. It isn't for many people in this forum either. I would rather have a sleek black or the occasional white phone. I don't think the 5C is for grown men period. Women will eat it up. The affluent Asian market will eat it up. It is for the market that wants to be different from the rest.

What we can all learn from this is the following: The media gets it wrong when it comes to Apple ALL of the time. Even I ate it up, thinking Apple would release a cheaper version of the iPhone. Has Apple EVER done anything like this? Has it ever tried to become the mainstream product that competes on price? Moving forward I don't ever see Apple coming out with a cheap iPhone for emerging markets. It just is not the way they have EVER done business. I am sure a bigger screen will come eventually, but it will take them years to do so. They have only increased the screen size of the iPhone by .5 inches in the 6 years the phone has been out. They did this without increasing the width of the phone at all. Apple has never been a reactionary company. They follow their own path. Whether that leads them to a downward spiral or they continue to gobble up 70% of the smartphone profits while only having 10% marketshare remains to be seen.

I can agree to that, but the iPad Mini was clearly a reactionary move. They wouldn't cannibalize their own more expensive models for nothing, they needed something to respond to the Nexus and Kindle.

I would buy the 5C over the 5 actually. It actually slightly better specs, and I think I'd like the red or the blue.

Note though that I bought the iPod mini in baby blue.

I also bought the white iBook when all the men were buying stodgy black plastic laptops. It was a great decision too, since all of a sudden there were college girls asking me about my laptop. As soon as I sold it and bought a TiBook, they stopped asking, so clearly they were just interested in the laptop, not me.

But then again, check out my avatar.

I sold mobiles back then and I'm pretty sure all those covers were 3rd party.

Apple sells the product they want you to have. Not the other way around. Somehow this works really well since they make you think that you were the one who wanted it.

Where did the rumor come from though that the 5C was going to be affordable and penetrate the Chinese market? It's neither. It doesn't even have the bands for China iirc.

Wierd, I agree with most of what you say there.

I also don't think that the 5C is anywhere near as bad as people are making out. I think apple got caught between fans inflated expectations and they're own marketing denigrating anything apart from aluminium unibodies.

The way you describe the synergy twixt the hardware and software sounds a lot like the lumia marketing though.

Exactly my point. Once you take out the labeling and marketing behind the 5c, it's just a crappier iPhone 5 that is slightly less expensive. Who cares about the entire product outside of the colors? It's barely interesting, and only because it's coming from Apple. The Jony Ive, wallpaper-color-matches-phone-color isn't new, it's the same feature of the Surface.

Well, that's the way it's always been with Apple iPhone launches. There has been one new phone, and the old phone gets a price cut and gets sold as the little brother.

Only the difference this time around is that there was a leak saying there would be a cheaper iPhone, and that generated a lot of hype and theories about it, but it turns out that cheaper iPhone really is just the 5 all over again with minor improvements and a different shell, and that same ~$100 price cut.

The problem here is all these people getting worked up about all the pre-release wishes not being fulfilled.

The reason I am saying that is looking into the future (and considering Jony Ive's massive influence on iDevices) I assume we will be seeing more of the same type of thing. It wouldn't surprise me if they made a slightly cheaper version of the iPad mini in multiple color types as well (right after they release a higher end retina-display version of the Mini).

It came from analysts and rumor sites. It was always assumed that the 5C would play the 3rd position behind the 5S and 5. Then a rumor leaked that the 5C was going to replace the 5 and the 4S would stay on board. I didn't understand why that would be the case but I also never envisioned Apple removing the 5 entirely from the lineup.

I wish they could have released a 5C in an 8 GB variant at free on-contract/$450 off-contract and gotten rid of the 4S entirely. A lot of people were hoping for a new iPhone that would fall in the $300-$450 range off-contract, and hence a lot of the anger post-keynote.

I find it surprising that something like the "non" in the picture below got by Ivy.

I noticed this during the presentation. The Apple logo should be in the middle circle, not "non" from "iPhone." Something like that would not have slipped by Jobs.

What are the improvements from the 5 to the 5C? Trying to find a spec list.

Improved facetime camera, whatever that means (as the paper specs are the same).
Longer battery life (with a slightly bigger battery).
iWork for free. Actually you get iWork I think if you buy the 5 new now, but not for a used one even if you install iOS 7.
And... Multiple colours!!!

VERY good observation.

I mean, anyone remember how guys would put Apple logos on their...dell laptops?

Anyways, I kind of like the 5c and the colors. And the plastic body especially would be nicer to hold I think. I'm actually not a fan of the sharp corners of most Apple phones. It sucks holding it.

And I think that next up...the 5c will be like a series of 5 darker colors? Or lighter colors? I wonder how do these color fashion schemes work?

I just had an idea: Maybe the 5C isn't for today.

Think about it, Apple could be in emerging markets today if it still sold the iPhone 4 or 3GS at even LOWER price points.

Maybe the 5C's purpose is to hang around long enough and be cheap enough to build to create a new rung on the iPhone ladder in two years. PS3 all over again.
