will be interesting if having NFC will actually make people and businesses finally interested in it. I've had NFC on my last 3 Android phones and as far as I know nobody around here uses it, or even really cares. Say what you want about Apple not doing much innovating, but they make shit popular. I predict NFC will be the next big thing 6 months after the iPhone 6 is out.

Only if they can still incorporate my credit card rewards with it. That was the main thing where I couldn't get my cash back with Google Wallet.

Businesses will all be required to have compatible readers by 2015 anyway, whether Apple does it or not. Don't confuse correlation with causation.

NFC compatible readers, or RFID compatible? Are they interchangeable, can the same sensor handle both, or will they need to have both in the reader?

I know that the states are moving to chip & PIN, but that's not NFC (to my understanding).

NFC uses the same frequencies and can/does emulate RFID. You should already be able to use Google Wallet anywhere that has a PayPass reader...

Knock knock is way better than touch ID. I have to hold the iPhone awkwardly to use touch ID everytime just to turn it on.

I don't know if knock codes would be considered by businesses/IT to be equivalent to passwords. I think many do consider Touch ID equivalent for low risk corporate purposes like Exchange and such. I know my IT group doesn't allow patterns or PINs for corporate phones.

I've never understood why android users keep talking about NFC. I had a Galaxy S4 for a year and the idea or even opportunity to use it never presented itself for that entire time. Apple has no need to use a standard they don't have airtight control over, and it's not even a widely used standard.

NFC.... who cares?

I am very very interested in the 2GB ram. If the 4.7" only comes with 1GB I will probably still buy the 5.5" but won't be happy about it.

Ah, so it's less a factor of the readers being NFC compatible than it is the devices being reader compatible. Interesting, thanks for clearing that up.

This site is claiming the 4.7" iPhone 6 only has 1 GB RAM.

http://www.macrumors.com/2014/08/29/a8-iphone-6-1-gb-ram/

However, I have my doubts (as I'm trying to remain optimistic). It claims the last digit is "8" which means 1 GB. However, they also do admit the pic isn't very good for assessing this, and "B" means 2 GB. 8 and B look so much alike.

Tangent: I've been teaching my < 2 year old daughter a few letters, and she constantly points to the number 8 and says "B".

Man I have an odd feeling about the iPhone design - the leaks continue even today and they continue to look quite unattractive to me.

Part of me still doesn't believe Apple will release an ugly iPhone and that either all the leaks are wrong or maybe the entire package will look better when put together.

The reason I'm starting to worry is that the last couple iPhone releases were well leaked and turned out to be mostly accurate.

Honestly the Galaxy Alpha looks better than these leaks in my opinion - plastic back or not.

I'm of the train of thought that it doesn't matter.

Apple makes both the hardware and the software, they would know best how much RAM is needed to make iOS 8 run perfectly... Clearly 1GB is more than enough. Hell even 512MB is enough, look at the 4S, it runs iOS 8 perfectly fine. The next device to become unusable is CERTAINLY not the iPhone 6.

Does iOS8 run better on a 4S than ios7 does? Because on my 4S iOS7 was a cruel joke and I had to turn off features to get it to respond satisfactorily (to me).

I agree with this. The design leaves a lot to be desired. Jony is getting lazy.

Come on, I use 4S's with iOS 7 every day. How is it a cruel joke.... iOS 7 on the 4 is a cruel joke! The 4S runs fine, taking into account that it only has 512MB of ram....!

It's definitely not unusable by any means, but even my iPhone 5s feels like it needs RAM. Either Safari is RAM starved, or else there is an issue with Safari, but what annoys me is that background tabs need to be reloaded often when you select them again. For example, it makes copying and pasting from other pages to say an AnandTech post really frustrating, because when you go back to the AnandTech page, it reloads, deleting everything you've entered before.

It should also be noted that it may be that the 64-bit iOS devices are more RAM starved than the 32-bit iOS devices. The memory footprint is larger for 64-bit. Not doubly larger, but larger nonetheless.

Is it? My wife's iPhone 5 stutters more on iOS 7 than on previous versions. It's not that often, but it happens. As iOS gets more complex I wonder if the 1GB of RAM will be a bad 2 year decision (before next replacement).

It'd be nice to have both, but 2 GB is much, MUCH more important than LTE-A.

I think apple could get away with only putting 1GB on there, even with the increased resolution, because their GPU is so good. But if it only has 1GB, I am sticking with my 5s. I already prefer 4" very much over 5" and 5.5 won't fit comfortably in my pocket, or operate well one handed.

I must say that in the next two months, the argument between you and I about whether apple will make a "Retina" Macbook Air will be settled. It's not looking good for me, but I'm still confident apple won't go "Retina" and will just incrementally increase the resolution (i.e. 1680x1050). We shall see.

But the iPhone having it will be the reason people use it. There are plenty of stores around my city that have tap to pay and I know a lot of people with Android phones that could use it, But none of my friends or neighbors do. With the iPhone 6 this will change and it will become the new thing. If every retailer upgraded but Apple doesn't put out a NFC phone nobody would care.

Given how iOS handles multitasking (or what you want to call what they do) the amount of RAM shouldn't matter that much unless some apps can fill up most or all of it by themselves. I can see the web browser doing that, but otherwise it shouldn't have to worry about running out and if it's fully, it shouldn't take a considerable amount of time to free some available memory.
