iPod brokewn/not working

I was trying to restore my iPod when it said the files were in use and shut down restoration mid-way.
Now my iPod shows up as a corrupted iPod on iTunes. It wont restore because the update cant be downloaded for some reason, and I cant access the menu on the iPod itself. Just move through songs by the Next/Last song button.
What can I do to reset my iPod?

Try downloading the updater separately?

try holding down the menu and center button for like 15 seconds. that resets the ipod, but if the firmware is already corrupt, try to find another computer to hook it up to and restore the firmware there.
