Ipod/Itunes crashing

So a couple days ago I connected my Ipod (3g 40gB) to my computer (running windows xp pro w/sp2) through USB 2.0 to sync it with Itunes. There were about 50 tracks that needed to be synced. After maybe 25 or so everything just completely locked up. I let it sit there for a couple minutes - and eventually this window popped up:

I tried all three buttons and eventually the window would just pop up again. I tried restarting - again tried to sync - same exact problem. So I updated the firmware on the ipod - tried again. Same problem. I cleared the entire ipod (deleted everything) - tried to sync. It crashed after about 1000/6000 songs. I then cleared my entire ITunes library, then readded them, then cleard the ipod again, and tried to re-sync. It crashed at the same place. I then uninstalled then reinstalled itunes, then cleared the ipod, then tried to manually add songs. I did 500 at a time, and after each 500 I restarted my computer, ipod, and external usb 2.0 hard drive (which has all of my mp3s on it). It locked up after about 1100 tracks had been transferred.

I'm going insane here. I'm starting to think that this is either a. a OS problem - something to do with how it's handling USB, or b. a hardware problem (as in something burnt out). Any suggestions?

Itunes has always been buggy, and especially so with large collections. My suggestion is to use a better player such as foobar2000 and a workaround third party program such as ephpod or anapod to put music on it (since it won't allow you to drag & drop in a file manager like the iriver & iaudio players).

Also, update the ipod firmware. Some recent fixes addressed iTunes/ipod conflict issues

I don't particuarly like Itunes - hell I still use Winamp alot instead of it - the only reason I have it installed is for my Ipod. Anyways - I tried Ephpod - and it locked up after about 2000 songs.

any other ideas?

Try rebooting the ipod itself (press and hold Menu + Play/Pause buttons)? I have a friend who had more or less the same problem, and he ended up RMA-ing it.

And in case you haven't already, try getting help from the ipodlounge.com forums.

Is that somehow different from using ipod updater to restore it?

I have tried restarting it many times - and it hasn't helped. Haven't tried the ipodlounge forums. (I didn't know about them)

Try a different computer. That drive H: erro9r, or drive M: for some people, occurs when you have a wrong entry for some default directory whose name elludes me right now. I think formatting fixed it. That said Java wouldn't install, so it was a system-wide problem. Try to install java at java.com and see if it give you the same error.

It looks like your Ipod might be physically flawed.

And don't listen to Gurck

I have a 60GB library, a 40GB gen4ipod, and Itunes handles it jsut fine.

, glad it works out well for you. However, a significant portion of users report bugginess, they can't simply be ignored.

Tried it on another computer - same results - drive not ready.

So - the hard drive is bad maybe?
