With the technology avail today, why are the ipods still so small in space. I would think they would be 256/512GB standard by now.

Do you mean the classic or the Touch? The classic uses a spinning hard drive still, and I think the highest capacity of those (that will fit in it I mean) is 240GB.

As for the Touch, there is only so much room in there for NAND, and there is also a component cost issue.

With 32GB of memory, my iPod Touch 4G has never been close to being filled. I guess I'm the intended market for that device.

My iPhone is a 32GB, I should have gotten the 64GB I think. I cannot fit my entire library on there period, but even if I could I wouldn't have any room left over for anything else.

32GB doesn't hold my entire library either, but then again just because it's in my library doesn't mean I want access to it. I just put what I want, it's not that hard to add/remove content from the device.

Really, my 16GB iPhone is cramped but not miserable. 32GB to 64GB is ideal to me.

Yea the density on these small drives has likely hit a peak. Or at least a peak in terms of cost/benefit for the harddrive manufacturers. "Do we really want to spend $100/per drive in research for drives with so low volumes that only sell for $100 each anyway?" I think I heard the last company that makes these small (physical dimensions) drives has stopped working on new models.

Who needs 256 or 512 gigs of music on a portable device? Do you really need to carry 100,000+ songs around? I guess if you're being shipped off to war for a year and that was the only way to access music it might be nice..

Damn, talk about a first world problem.

If iTunes Match worked exactly like I thought it would, then I wouldn't have any issues, I have unlimited data, I could stream whatever I didn't have on the phone directly.

I just like having access to my entire library in case there is that one song that I want to listen to.

Lossless? That can balloon library sizes quickly.

The only iPod I have is a classic that sees permanent car use, so it needs to be able to hold my entire library.

Yea I can get that there can be lots of data, my point is more so, who really needs '6 weeks' of non-stop audio on their mobile iPod at one time? Who actually listens to EVERY song in their library? Would it be the end of the world if you didnt bring that old Backstreet Boys song with you on your walk Stu? :sneaky:

It's not about listening to every song, it's about being able to listen to any song at any time, regardless of network coverage (ie. underground). I can understand the desire for that.

It's super important that I know that they want it that way thank you very much!

For me, it's more about, if the mood to hear the dulcet tones of a 90s boy band strikes me, I want to know that I can sate that at a moment's notice.

Is also a matter of, particularly on my iPhone, still having room left-over for pictures, apps, and the occasional movie.

How exactly does it not meet your needs?

In it's current form, it's an either/or, I can either sync to my computer, or use iTunes Match. I cannot do both. Also, there are certain playlist limitations that exist within iTunes Match.

I will play with it some more, maybe they fixed that in iOS 6.

I've embraced Pandora and not having to decide which song/artist/album to listen to. But I get the issue. How about an SD card slot? Or, better yet, a mini-disk slot. I could get that lost format out of the closet and be set.

Interesting, I've never tried playlists since I usually listen by album, but nevermind...

I thought you were going to say something about streaming vs. downloading and I was ready to jump down your throat. I've had it with the BS from people who don't understand how it works.

wifi harddrive and an android phone is a good way to do it... or a raspberry pi and a usb harddrive... or even a flagship android phone capable of otg but that can be hit and miss sometimes.

i agree though. wish they made a touch ipod with a zif drive. an mp3 player with less then 128gb of storage is just a toy to carry with you when you need it. a car media player is a different story.
