Iraq: Losing control.

Falling morale goes hand-in-hand with a lack of discipline.

There was a vivid example of that here earlier this week when an Iraqi working as a TV sound recordist for the Reuters news agency was shot dead by an American soldier.

His only mistake was to have approached an area where there had been a shooting incident.

Innocent civilian

Waleed Khaled appears to have been fired on without any warning. He leaves behind a wife who is four months pregnant and a seven-year-old daughter.

The Reuters cameraman with him was injured and, although the main witness to what had happened, he was promptly arrested by the Americans.

Before he was taken away, the cameraman was able to tell colleagues what had occurred.

When an American journalist working for Reuters, managed to get to the scene with a British security adviser, he found the Americans laughing and joking around Waleed's body.

They were also refusing to give the injured cameraman any water.

The security adviser - a former British soldier - said it was apparent to him that the American troops wanted to clear away any evidence before there could be an outside inquiry.

He said what was most worrying was that the unit did not seem to care that they had shot dead an innocent civilian.

The American military authorities say their investigations are continuing.

Rule #1: Don't trust BBC

They've been blatently anti-war from day one. Might as well be watching Al-Jazeera.

But guys, you're forgetting all of the innocent people we're saving from that jerk Saddaam. I know people there, and they say the children love them because they saved them.

Constitution guarantees that you can't tell them to "Don't go around calling" as they have the right to call people partisans if they wish. They also have the full right to Bash Bush!

Isn't the Constitution wonderful?

What does this have to do with the constitution? It's hypocritical to call someone a partisan when you are in fact a partisan.

You don't have the right to tell them to stop though.

Do these troops get a fair investigation or anything? When has the BBC become the judge and jury?

I can't? I thought the constitution guaranteed free speech, right? I can tell them to stop all day long if I choose to, they just don't have to listen.

You are correct as long as you don't try to enforce it!

I think things are getting slightly off-topic, if not interesting, but..
I was not there, so I didn't see it for myself, but it sounds awful. I have no particular reason to distrust BBC. If you do, you can't really trust CNN either or any other source (I'm from the EU, so I don't know them all. In my country there's one real newsbroadcast, from channel 1 ).
Iraq is a difficult place to be for a soldier, and I understand it is hard but if what BBC broadcasts is true, things are going wrong. I fear that Iraq doesn't have the capacity to guarantee it's own stability. Opinions differ too much in that country. Torn by zealous religion of different ethnic groups. American is trying to make sure it doesn't fall apart now.
But it's not going well. And at what cost? For how long will the US keep trying? What will happen next?
What course is history taking as we speak?

What part of the above is not blatant terrorism?!?!?!

It's unbelievable. And for corpseofworms... we have killed thousands and thousands of innocent Iraqi's. I'm not so sure if it's that good we've removed Saddam. That new constitution draft is a sham... it is horrible.

i wonder what it's going to take until the neocons realize what a monstrous and horrific disaster Iraq is becoming. the only way I forsee things changing is under new leadership, and the only course of action that seems reasonable to me at this point is to slowly withdraw. let's face the goddamn facts people, when it comes to the Middle East we haven't a fscking clue how to govern these people. we don't know what they want and desire for themselves, and we should not be telling them how to run their governemnts. if they want democracy, let them fight for it themselves. that is the only way true democracy will occur in the middle east.

A fair judge and jury? You're opening a can of worms there.

Why did the US never ratify a convention that would have meant all accused of war crimes could have been tried in an international criminal court?

I've seen reports of US soldiers sentenced to two months in prison for murder...blatant murder, not shooting someone by accident.

I've also heard reports of individuals who've been locked up for several years with no charge at all. You want a fair investigation? Ask there first.

You still want to question the BBC on their reports? I want all the accurate reporting I can get.

Do you want to gag the press?
