IRQ HELL

One would think my Abit BH6 board with an AGP and 6 PCI slots and then a vintage ISA slot, should be allowed by Windows 98 to fill all those slots up and use the full potential of the MoBo. But noooooooooooooo!!! :disgust:
I've pulled an all nighter and now 1/2 my father's day trying to get this to work... but no dice... grrrrrr :|

Can anybody tell me for sure whether an ASUS CUSL2 or ? would give me a better chance for success?

Have you disabled any uneeded ports in the bios?
serial
maybe even the parallel

If you are using every avaible slot in the MoBo in Win98, it won't work. I doesn't matter what MoBo your using. Windows 98 doesn't have advanced IRQ routing, only Win2k does. That's the only OS that'll work.

the agp slot and the #1 pci slot can't be occupied at the same time.

Say what -- we can't use the AGP AND #1 PCI slot? Geeesh what a bummer waste, I never heard that before. Why doesn't any of my tech docs tell me this?

Actually, you can use PCI1 and AGP...but I don't recommend it. PCI1 shares resources with AGP and AGP isn't too good at sharing. It's pretty much a HOG.

your bios may (mine does) let you disable irq for graphics modem etc...try that...

by the way, win98 does have irq routing though it is called irq steering...go to control panel, system, system devices, pci bus to change the settings...this is the same as irq routing, right? or do i have the 2 terms confused?

Yes,

IRQ steering is the same thing as IRQ routing, but Windows 98 implmentation of it is basic, at best, compoared to Win2k. I can almost guarentee, that if you fill all your slots in your m0b0, Win98 will not be able to handle it all, only Win2k will (mind you, with tweaking).
