You Have the Right to Remain Sober . .

Anything you drink inside a tavern will be held against you in a court of law.

Even if you're just sitting there drinking with your friends, and uninvited guests.

Undercover police enter bars, mix with the crowd, and decide who they should arrest.
'Public Intoxication' can be anything that they want it to be.

When will the Though Police get near you.

WoWZA~~~Finally the law is being applied fairly.
No where does it say you have the right to be intoxicated in a bar!!!
You go there to have a drink or 2.....
Not drink or 12 and then drive home.

The irving Police are well within there right to enter bars looking for intoxicated people which quite literally is against the law even in bars!!

I see no exceptions ot exemptions that state its ok to be drunk in a bar.....

Good Job Irving Police!!!!!

I think the lady who said "Your state sucks." hit the nail on the head.

What are these people thinking?

This kind of heavy handed stuff is going to hurt their tourism industry.

(why someone would willingly go to texas I don't know though)

Public intoxication used to be a crime in many places. It was used primarily to hassle bums on the rare occassions when it was used. Most places have either repealed or no longer enforce these laws.

There must be more to this story-either a holy roller sheriff trying to curry electoral favor or a bar that pissed off the cops for some reason - possibly even a corrupt police department looking for shakedown/protection money from the bar.

I wouldn't blame in on Texas, per se-didn't your state consider it a god given right to have an open container of alcohol in the car for years and years?

Ya this is kind of stupid. When I was in college they would at least wait in the parking lot and see if you tried to get behind a wheel of a car before arresting you.

From the article:
Irving officers and state agents targeted 36 bars and clubs Friday
and arrested some allegedly intoxicated patrons before they departed the businesses.

and again - 'intoxicated' is in the eyes of the beholder, and they used feild sobriety tests inside the bars to confirm it.

I just think that this is reaching to enforce a dubious application of laws for an agenda.
They go get into a car to drive, and that's a different matter.

Uh uh...can't take that chance. Just like when you've got a crowd of Iraqis--any ONE of them could be a terrorist so you blow them all away. Better safe than sorry!

how are private establishments considered "public"? I know where I live, they cant get you until you step outside... I've seen them wait until soemone tried to walk to a waiting cab, and nailed them there, but inside the bar?! no way... that's just plain evil.

Unreal. Pre-emptive drunk driving arrests is what this amounts to. I guess "fsckin idiotic ideas" is something that trickles down from the highest levels of our government.

BTW, there's no legal compulsion to take a field sobriety test. You're well within your rights to refuse it.

ESPECIALLY if you are not behind the wheel of a car, and therefore not at risk to lose your license.

Their excuse is that the local City Government issued the Alcohol License therefore giving them jurisdiction inside the establishments.

Calm down, and take your pills bucko, your getting all anxious on us again.

Maybe a fresh tom clancey novel would suit you until the bodycounts come back from the newest slaughter of iraqis.

Wow... Only 21 posts to go from a police problem in a small city to a full-on Bush-bash. I'm surprised it took so long.

It's almost like playing the Kevin Bacon game. Can you connect Bush to anything to goes wrong, anywhere in the world, in six steps or less?

It snowed in California... GO!
