Why is it that it's a math problem, and the people who majored in math in college (and did well in college) all know that .999repeating equals exactly 1. But there are a bunch of people who *didn't* major in math in college who insist that they're right. Unfortunately the people who didn't major in math seem rather incapable of understanding all the valid proofs offered by the math majors. And the non-math majors seem to think they can offer proofs about things they just don't understand.
I can't figure that out. If there was a thread about what a female orgasm felt like, and I started telling all the females that they were wrong, then insisted I was right... I'd look like an idiot. If I went to a thread about how to fix a car engine (which I really don't know much about) and insisted that the mechanics who were posting there were idiots (or lemmings, or whatever), I'd look like an idiot. Don't the people claiming that .999repeating doesn't equal 1 realize that they look like idiots?!?
I just hope there is a God. Because if there is, he's definitely pretty good at math (look how perfect he got things for the universe to exist as it is.) And I hope that when you all get to the pearly gates, St Peter is there and says "Ok, the Bibles have it all wrong, it's not based on morals. To get into heaven, you've gotta answer just one question. Is .999repeating equal to 1?"
