Saying 1 = 0.999... is like saying you're not a virgin when you've only received a BJ. It may have the same basic phyiscal value, but it's just not quite there...I think so, my math teacher showed us that it does = 1 it seemed to make sense.
You're like a lemming... jsut because a teacher shows you something, doesn't mean that its right. Use your own judgement... dammit, THINK for youself!!!
WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM? READ THE POST! I SAID I THINK SO, NOT "MY TEACHER SAYS IT IS" IT WAS MY OWN JUDGEMENT. SORRY IF THAT IS MY OPINION.
Sir, calm down sir. This thread is all in good fun and entertainment.

That could be miss, but whatever.

We're having a debate at work. Is 1=0.99999..... repeating. I say that this holds but one of my coworkers claims that multiplication breaks down for an infinitely repeating number.
x = 0.9999...
10x = 9.9999...
10x - x = 9.9999... - 0.9999...
9x = 9
x = 1.
What do you think?
All I do in the 3rd step is subtraction. 10x - x = 9x, and 9.9999.... - 0.9999... = 9.Originally posted by: godspeedx

But if for your third step you divide 9.9999. . . by 10 you do not get 1.
I'm not saying that I think it does or doesn't equal one, becuase there seems to be some amount of "proof" for both - I'm merely supplying an interesting thought. =)
