Hell no.

WORD TO YO MUTHA

Even with posts like these, this thread'll never make it to 1000 posts.

Maybe you should reduce your goal to 900 posts instead.

Why do you have to be so negative? I think ATOTers need to have a more postive attitudes. Never Say "never," it can be done! Currently I'm postulating a proof for the 0.9999... != 1. So we MUST get this to 1000 posts.

lol! This is still alive? Well... this topic has made me go get a discrete mathematics book to read over. Actually... more like some EE left it by the door and left a sign saying "TAKE IT!". Chapter one mentioned 0.999... = 1, but it said that this may be an incorrect proof. I'll be reading over it the next couple days.

Btw... can we ever change the password for our account? I can't remember mine at all.... I have to go to the original email every time.

I'm sure this has been said, but.

Think of 0.9999999999 as 0.9+0.09+0.009....(9*(.1)^n)

Then you use a/(1-r) to find the sum as n goes to infinity.

0.9(1-0.1)=1

I hate math, it's black magic....

Just for fun.
1/9 = .1111111....... repeating
2/9 = .2222222....... repeating
3/9 = .3333333....... repeating
4/9 = .4444444....... repeating
5/9 = .5555555....... repeating
6/9 = .6666666....... repeating
7/9 = .7777777....... repeating
8/9 = .8888888....... repeating
9/9 = .9999999....... repeating

But what else does 9/9 equal to?

Also, the density theorem of real numbers states that given any real numbers x and y such that x < y WLOG, then there exists a rational number r, such that r x < r < y.

Since .9999999....... and 1 are both real numbers then find me the value of r that fits the density theorem.

Many more proofs were those came from.

edit
And for compute rounding. I don't remember, but there are some simple mathematical calculations that if you enter them into the computer or a calculator all at once you will recieve a .99999999...... instead of 1. The strange part is that these calculations are very simple such that an elementary student would tell the answer is one in seconds, and entering the numbers one by one will alse yeld the correct result.

why do people think that 0.999... has a limit? 0.999... is a number, nothing more. does the nubmer 2 have a limit? what about 3? what about pi? functions can have limits. series can have limits. but to say that a single number has a limit is just silly. yet another common mistake made by the people that think 0.999... != 1, and one that is easily shot down.

well, people keep referring to it as a limit. let's put it this way, if someone were to give you 0.9999... or something as compared to 1 which would you take? or would you not care because they are equal?

Excellent job Madrat. I'm convinced now.
