Is AMD killing the 754

When AMD announced the new 90nm parts at 3000+, 3200+, and 3500+ I assumed the 3000 and 3200 were 754 parts, but it now looks like they are 939, and comming in cheap. Now also consider they announced they will make a sempron for 939 and havent announced any chips for 754 and that the 3700+ for 754 is a 1MB cache part (the only one that is still exclusivly 1MB) and it looks like 754 isn't long for this world.

sorry for the noobness, but whats the big deal? all the oc'ers dont want to get another mobo in a few years? personally, i wouldn't mind... they'd have new features by then for less cost.

Correct me if I am mistaken but I thought the news of AMD not really supporting their s754 line by the end of this year was old news? Am I mistaken?

Well I for one assumed that 462 would bite the dust first, but it looks like amd is hanging on to that one. I guess they are keeping 462 because integrated graphics look difficult to do on the athlon64 platform. I also thought that they would make some 90nm parts for the 754. I wasn't expecting AMD to back fill the 939 range so deeply from the start. Usually when a manufacturer comes out with a new process they start at the top of the range and work backward. In this case I was expecting a 2.6GHz part to be called 4000+ from the get go. I wasn't expecting this to happen so fast, but with this one release 754 is now dead.

SKT754 Sempron should keep the platform around for awhile yet.

socket 754 sempron aint no joke either, i am really impressed at the performance of the K8 based sempron.

jus built a 754 rig, with a 3200, far as i am concernd i can go up to 3700 for a upgrade if i need to, should be plenty, im off to uni for 5 yrs so money would of been an issue if i hadnt built now

all those waiting to build new rigs.....jus build it now an be done else u'll always be waiting another 6months for that latest product

This is different. If you can wait another 1-2 months we should have 939 boards with PCI-Ex and then, with dual core 90nm processors due next year, you have a board that offers a long upgrade path.

I would say that 754 is dead unless the 2800 754 version gets a big price cut and ends up under $100. If that happens then it will be a sweet deal.

EDIT: Upgrade paths are always silly to try and hang onto because eventually you need to buy another motherboard anyways and for $100 it's not that big of a deal if you wait 12 to 18 months.

754 will *eventually* die, but I don't expect it to go anywhere for the next 12 months. It's a lower-cost alternative to Socket939 with almost the same performance -- it's not like there's no demand for it.

Socket A is still cheaper, both motherboards and processors, than 754. Budget systems are a big part of AMD, so I wouldn't expect it to go anywhere for a while either.

The 'demise' of socket 754 is just an urban legend, purported and kept live by various websites and Forum posters who always give "you might want to wait for..." -idiot advice.

Socket 754 hardware is so much cheaper to produce, including the pin package, that it will remain a brilliant value offer for foreseeable time. Performance/cost, it beats 939 hands down. And will continue to do so, until A64 performance has reached such heights, the single channel RAM is becoming a serious bottleneck. That ain't going to happen soon, and when it happens, all current 939 boards are going to be long obsolete.

When 64-bit takes off, I'll expect 754 to be the major AMD offering in prebuilts.

I've heard nothing from AMD that suggests 754 is to be discontinued, on the contrary they've murmured about upping the HT and DDR speed.

I agree, at least for the overseas market if not here.
