ATI is very dumb, I think.

Lately, nVidia got a chance to dominate the market with the GeForce3. ATI showed a preview of their Radeon 8500 what, a month and a half ago? That is probably what prompted such urgent release of the GeForce3 Titanium. And it seems ATI missed their chance. Now the market will get saturated with even cheaper GeForce3 and the faster GeForce3 Titanium, and ATI will be too late.

Sure, ATI's Radeon 8500 may be faster, but.. Instead of being able to sell their Radeon 8500 at around $350 as they originally planned (or was it $400?), they will have to compete against $250 GeForce3 and $300 Titaniums. Which will be tough.

So is ATI dumb or what?!

The ATI Card is supposedly do out this week, performance should be above a Geforce 3, nearing Ti500 or maybe better and it will cost around $250. Some have even got it for closer to 200. Better 2 plus excellent DVD playback amoung the features make this a tempting card in its own right. Also Ati just wants to get the launch of this right with a solid driver. We shall see I guess.

I know it will start selling at $250 (or less with that Dell deal), BUT had they released it earlier even with semi-crappy drivers, they could start charging around $300 per card! Now if they wait for another month, those cards will have to go for $200 in order to become popular.

I mean come on, GeForce3 runs everything at almost any resolution at 32 bit at more than acceptable frame rates. And some GeForce3 (Gainward) have great 2d quality. As for the DVD playback, that stopped being an issue with the release of 500+ MHz CPUs.

I tend to disagree, if the performance is = to or better then nvidia, I so no reason why it won't sell well. Crappy drivers tarnished ati reputation in the past, and is a sore spot for many people on here.

I don't think the "delay" is a problem.

Anyone shopping for video cards in this price range is aware that the 8500 will be available soon. Anyone buying a video card now without waiting to see what the shipping 8500 is capable of doing is stupid.

If ATI had shipped the product early, without good drivers, they would have done even more damage to their reputation. (although we don't know if it is shipping with good drivers yet). I don't believe any extra that they might have been able to charge could make up for that.

I don't think so.

In a few days ATi is releasing a card that costs less, has more performance and has more features than the GF3.

That doesn't sound dumb to me.

Aha, sure, we heard that 2 weeks ago! Now NewEgg pushed the ETA (damn, I almost typed "ATI" instead of "ETA") to October 15 (from the 5th, from Sept 29th), and I bet they will again.

So guys, come back in a couple of months, and we'll all have a good laugh about ATI And their mysterious Radeon 8500 that never was

VBoy, you are just full of crap.
First you were like ya... Radeon8500 is listed as $350....
and in your second post after Adul said it will be sold at around $250, then you said you knew that.
What? I think you are just full of sh!t.

j@cko,

I think you're a farting wacko.

P.S. I hereby revoke your Platinum Member status and condemn you to drawing ad banners for ATI for free

sorry VBboy, you're in a lost cause. They'll defend a card they've never seen to the death for some reason. People like J@cko there will say you're full of sh!t even though he obviously didn't read your posts too carefully.

Anyhow, the radeon 8500 looks like it has a lot to offer and I hope it'll keep Nvidia on their toes.

Regardless of whether or not ATI is dumb, they are still releasing a competitive product, which will in turn force nVidia to have to come out with an even more spectacular spring release if they want to be able to keep their market lead on ATI.

So in the end, it's a win win situation for us...

Selling cheap videocards may be good for you and me, but it cuts down profit. Look at AMD's finnancial trouble, athough AMD is gaining market share because of selling excellent processors at cheap price. 3dfx had this problem also. If you release a product later than the competion, you're forced to lower price to stay competitive.

I have a Geforce 2 pro in my Duron 866Mhz machine and a Radeon LE in my t-bird 1.4g. The dvd quality is noticeably better on the Radeon. I pre-ordered my Radeon 8500 from Dell and can't wait to see what it has to offer!!

I also wonder how anyone can comment on the "superior quality" of this new Radeon 8500's 2d quality. No one even benchmarked the final board yet (except for that German dude), let alone compared its 2d quality to that of other cards. For all we know, ATI saved every penny by putting in the crappiest filters to achieve the worst 2d quality possible

(Of course, that is not likely to be the case, but still some people like to make very wild assumptions)

As far as the preliminary benchmarks look right now (with the current drivers), the radeon card looks like a better deal in the price/peformance category, I just have to wait till newegg's got it in stock.

PeteyPete,

You'll be waiting for a while, because NewEgg's ETA got pushed back for the third time

ATI has produced a very competive part but they need to realize hardware will only run as fast as the drivers written for it. If ATI writes crap drivers that cripples the 8500, I think it will be all over for them. I hope they are taking this delay to work on better drivers. I know alot of people don't like the "daily" Detonator drivers from Nvidia but atleast you know Nvidia is working hard on supporting their product. I really don't want to see ATI fall apart as I don't want to pay $1000 for my next Geforce 4 card.

I can't believe the crap in this thread.
"OH ATI IS $400!!! GEFORCE IS ONLY $250!!!"
That's the DV ATI, if you're looking for pure games - and if you have a geforce you probably do (unless you go for deluxe and get tvout and the works), you will compete with a $250-300 radeon 8500.

NVidia driver releases are fishy. Those det4s looked worse on games I played, but upped the FPS - is that how it's supposed to be? NVidia is good at FPS and 3dmarks.

<sarcasm> Oh yeah, that's possible. ATI propably does everything they can to destroy themselves right now. </sarcasm>

C'mon, what do you have against ATI? So far it looks good, someone is finally coming up with a card that can really compete against nVidia's offerings and we all know competition is always good.

Damn zealots...

From a PR point of view I think it goes without saying that ATi is moronic at best. First they allow reviewers to post previews of non functioning hardware with horrible drivers, the latter of which is something ATi has built a reputation on that they are just starting to get rid of. They decide to allow reviewers to post their thoughts on incomplete drivers sending a few people who may have been on the edge, into nVidia's camp.

Then, they announce ship dates for products that they can't hit. The announce these dates a month or so before nVidia announces their fall part and yet nVidia bests them to retail. This helps them appear even less competent moving even more people to look elsewhere for their 3D fix. Now you have a situation that a lot of people have ordered the Radeon8500 and have been told their board would be arriving on several different days, some of them were supposed to have their boards by now and have been informed that it will be nearly a month before they actually get them. This gives ATi another round of negative press throughout the community, if not covered by the sites themselves the boards are full of it.

I really can't think of any way possible for ATi to have pulled off a worse launch then what they have done with the R8500 on a PR basis. They should actively recruit any of 3dfx's former PR guys they can get, or fire whoever it was at the executive level who allowed this cluster f*** to happen. ATi's reputation is tainted enough amongst the gaming community with their shoddy drivers and previously blown launches(Rage128 springs to mind), they don't need to compound their appearance of being unable to execute.

So they can hype up their card more than the geforce 3. Hey it actually worked. Everyone is waiting for the 8500.

If the ATI gives the performance of my Geforce 3 WITHOUT the distance tearing in games I'll buy it for $500. I dont give a poop as long as I can model and play games seemlessly like I do now.
