Now that would be the FB killer moment imho. If you could post to, and read status updates from, and otherwise interact with your FB contacts through G+, without the need whatsoever to log into FB, then FB would be seriously threatened.

I doubt somehow that it would be feasible though.

I've never really looked at it, but Facebook has to have some kind of public API to support mobile apps and so on, so it should be totally possible. Of course if G+ tried to do that I'm sure Facebook would block them or sue them.

There was a webapp that let you import your contacts from facebook to google+. Facebook blocked the way it worked within 48hrs..

Google will continue to make gains against others. G-mail may still be lagging, but you have to remember, how many of those Yahoo emails are "active"? I switched from Yahoo to Gmail for push email to my phone. But am I just going to close my yahoo email now? No, I just forward it now.

On the other hand if Google + goes well, I will quickly deactivate facebook.

The problem with that theory is that Google already has a ton of services it can integrate with Google+. You're telling me that Facebook needs to develop a search engine, mapping software, e-mail server, document editors, video site, web browser and everything else that Google's already done? If that's the case, Facebook is screwed. But Facebook has the leg up at the moment because they have half a billion users already established, and 6+ years of being the premiere social networking site. Google has been a Jack-of-all-trades, doing a little bit of everything, sometimes being the best (their search engine, mapping, and Google docs), sometimes being outplayed (YouTube beating Google video before Google bought YouTube, Google Wave, etc.). Facebook is starting with a hearty advantage, which is good for them, because if Google integrates EVERYTHING with Google+, there's no way Facebook beats them on a level playing field. Having a big lead to start will prove vital.

Maybe Facebook can eventually compete with Google via social search, but I doubt it. What I meant was that Facebook needs to be ready to whatever it takes to maintain their status as THE social network, even if that means just ripping off crap that Google comes out with. After all, Facebook does have a huge advantage -- they already have 700 million users, who all have friends, pictures, etc on FB.

Facebook aside, the company that should really be scared is Twitter. As currently constituted, Google+ is more like a Twitter+ version of Twitter than a Facebook clone. Both companies should be on alert (they clearly are), and who knows if Google+ will work out, but Google is taking this initiative much more seriously than they took Wave or Buzz. They clearly are ready to throw resources behind + to make it work and when it comes down to it, they have a lot more in the war-chest than Twitter or FB.

so this is what it looks like now

http://www.rootminus1.com/admin/Rand/Untitled%20copy.jpg

see that big blacked out area on the right, its pretty much a list of post/comment/status change history for everyone you are friended with

see it in Opera, IE and FF

Yeah, I don't see that either. I see the "Chat (#)" but I don't see that stuff when you open it. It just gives me the regular list of people to chat with. Also I noticed you don't have the list of people on the left side that has all the little people icons that you can just click on to chat with.

If anybody is in a position to understand the mistakes that MySpace made and to avoid them in the future, it's got to be Facebook. Zuckerberg admitted that if MySpace had simply copied exactly what FB was doing from 2004-2006, there's no way he could have beaten them. Same rules apply here. If Google launches an innovative feature, FB needs to clone the crap out of it ASAP.

Unless facebook is willing to have reasonable privacy policies they're not going to be able to follow google+.

Dang that is huge, I thought gmail was a small niche service

Yeah no gmail hit mainstream a while ago. I still think yahoo #s are inflated with people checking their "old" yahoo but switched to gmail like myself.

*facepalm*

?

He posted that facebook will try and take the features that are good from Google+ and copy them. My point was that one of the biggest things people dislike about facebook was their terrible way of dealing with privacy. Google+ already appears to be much better. Unless facebook is willing to completely revamp the way they deal with privacy they aren't going to be able to compete with Google+ on something that many people care about.

Facebook has already made it quite clear that they don't care about all the complaints they get from their users over this so I don't anticipate they'll do much to change unless absolutely forced to.

hm what's this?

I just don't understand this OMG FACEBOOK HAS NO SECURITY bullshit. Spend 5 minutes on your privacy settings and BOOM your profile is locked down. You even have an option to preview what your page will look like based on a person's security setting.

Actually the Circles feature on Google+ is awesome. I never added my family nor my work colleagues to FB only because I didn't want them to see everything that I was doing. With Google+, this isn't an issue since you could create separate circles of people and share different things with each of the circles. You can't do this with FB.

I'm sure FB is going to copy this if they haven't done so already.

Security in Facebook is non-intuitive. This is a bigger point than it appears some posters realize. Google+ on the other hand is suuuuuuuuuuper intuitive (I don't have to use Google search to figure out how exactly to lock things down-- I did have to Google how to see my facebook page as someone else sees it).

Also-- People use free email that isn't Gmail? /mindblown (I am under 30 though).

You're a dipshit. Facebook has had it for years. You're just too stupid to realize it's there!

I used hotmail for a long time before Gmail got popular enough to use it. I can see why a lot of people wouldn't even bother switching to gmail. There's no reason to if hotmail fits your bill

Is google trying to ambush this project by making it so hard to get on that by the time the general public can get on those early adopters have already lost interested because nobody can get in? Who the F thought that was a good idea?

haha, it really is more hated than IRS per comment above

http://www.switched.com/2010/07/20/facebook-even-more-reviled-than-the-irs-study-says/

My issues with facebook are I don't like its founder, don't trust its privacy whatsoever at all, and it is trying to be too invasive with other sites. Its apps are to me crap and I hate seeing people's use of them popup on my status.

All G+ would need is an import feature

Has anyone tried to post that link on facebook?

It looks like they block things that are critical of facebook. :\

1. create lists
2. create status message
3. change visibility settings of status message -> customize -> add lists to publish to or exclude

I really like the feel of Google+, so far it is by far superior to Facebook for usability and appearance. Whether or not it can attract the userbase that Facebook is unknown, but I doubt it. I don't think the average person is ready for such a drastic change so far.

I do think, though, that as time goes by people will slowly start spilling over. Google can afford to leave the service up indefinitely even if it's not terribly successful, so it has future potential.

I really hope it catches on.

The problem with that is there is no way to control who sees what when using the mobile app. If you post a picture it's public until you get to a pc and change it. With Google+ it's built right in and very easy to use.

How did you sign up and just get an invite last night if they have been closed to signups for several days now?

*shrugs* Perhaps I had an invite from earlier? I didn't have any real notification except that a friend had shared something, I went to plus.google.com, and it offered to sign me up.
