Is it worth putting in the few extra dollars to get an AMD 3500+ rather than a 3400+. Why or Why not?

If you get the 3400+, get the 2.4ghz NewCastle. The extra mhz for the most case is alittle faster than the double of the L2 cache. Sometimes the cache wins, but for the most part the extra mhz wins.

If you don't mind OC'ing, get a cheaper model and see what you can do with it.

I would have thought that the extra mhz would be minimal between 3400/3500.
The L1/L2 caches run at the same speed of the processor, so for the sake of a 1or 2% increase in cpu, i would go for the cache.

Although at these sort of speeds, it probably wont be noticeable which option you go for, unless you are a stickler for benchmarks.
Does it matter whether it takes .0089 seconds to do a calculation, or .0088seconds?

get the 3400 clawhammer. Great card, you get get it for 300 retail, and 1mb L2. Plus you can OC it for the extra speed if u need it that badly.

I was comparing the newcastle and clawhammer versions of the 3400+ cpu. I wasn't comparing to 3500+ at all. I think for the money that socket 754 is still the way to go. Hopefully AMD will drop prices on s939.

Is there a significant increase in speed with 32-bit apps?
or does the 64bit cpu manage the same speed as an equivalent 32bit cpu when running those olde 32bit apps?

The "extra 32-bit" aren't used when running under a 32-bit Windows. They will only grant a performance increase under a 64-bit OS and a 64-bit application.

That's a matter of perspective. Applications that are compiled in 32-bit mode processors will run slower than if they are compiled in 64-bit mode. Since just about everything still runs in 32-bit mode, most people tend to look at a 64-bit enabled app as giving a performance boost.

I don't even think the 3400+ is worth it. Go 3000+ or at most 3200+. Save some cash and spend it on something that'll give you more of a performace boost like a video card (if your a gamer).
