I was shorted about 10,000 blocks for yesterday's count. I'm sure it's ok though... as always happens whenever there is a glitch, Mika quickly gets things going smoothly again.

THANKS MIKA!!!

Hehe,

I just had an unusual thought.... How about we tell Mika to take some of the funds that we all donated to the server effort and use 'em to pick up a mobile phone with a low minute plan.

Then all he has to do is give out the number to a select, trusted few folks and we could bug him about the status of the proxy(s) any 'ole time we wanted.

Translation... we could make his life a living hell.

... or then again, we could just find out if he could grant remote access to the proxy machine to the same select few and then there would be a variety of folks who could reset the proxy remotely...

Nahhh.... that would be too simple.

Mika? What do ya think about this as an idea? Does it sound like a good or bad one? Would it work, etc?

The remote access idea is the best one Thunder. However, we'd need to find a relitively cheap program with great security, so that no one breaks in.

Thunder-

I like the remote access idea. These problems have come up a couple of times when Mika is away, remember Christmas 1999?
I believe Mika runs the proxy on an NT4 server box, so I'm sure that the NT admins around here could be easily set up to do some remote administration.
Engineer has some interesting ideas in regards to backing up to Clueless, and I am going to start using Clueless a little more myself to cut down on the overall connection time to Mika. The pproxy connection time to Mika over my cable modem is incredibly fast. I still think that using various reliable proxies between Mika and the clients is ultimately the answer.

Nothing is better then Remotelyanywhere. And I do mean NOTHING.

This program uses the NT user database to authentiate users for login and so on. It also has a screen picture based remote control for those with low bandwidth, and it has a java interactive client that will Grab console so that the console keyboard and mouse get disabled for the time period. You can do anything and everything with it. BUT the best feature is that it uses your web browser as the interface. No in-compatible software issues, any os, any time, any where it will work. Just my rant on the software I use here at my home and serveral servers at far off locations. It also works on windows 95, 98, NT, and 2000 boxes.

Link is

http://www.remotelyanywhere.com The cost isn't as cheap as I would like but it works DANG!!! nice.

Download the demo, and try it yourselves.

Thanks for looking into it Beefcake! I don't like any unused blocks lying around so what I'll do is wait until the active buffer dries up before swapping out for a fresh 100K buffer. That'll mean occasionally for a short periods of time, you might see that my pproxy is out of packets as well but it should not be long before I refresh it. Thanks for your patience.

Feel free to use my pproxy at: pproxy.iodbbs.com. It accepts connections on ports 23, 80, and 2064. So people behind firewalls can use it as well! I have a ton a blocks available, and won't be dumping the buff-out (pprc5out.rc5 for pproxies) until Mika's is fully operational again.

Note: My pproxy did run out earlier and I fixed it as soon as realized Mika's was inoperative. Sorry to the few people who were using it, but all is good once again!

can the RC 5 client be configured so it would fall back to different proxies of our choice if the main one is down? Kind of like Configuring DNS for a linux box? It would be nice to be able to have secondary and tertiary proxies that could automatically be chosen if the main was down. I know it will look for Dnet, but I'd like to be able to point to anotehr that flushes through Mika's

I've been out of town as well and just got back in tonight. I've been monitoring everything through my parents AOL account, but couldn't post.

I was down to 400 blocks before I was able to switch my pProxy over to Clueless Proxy. I used VNC, which is easy to setup and has support on Unix, Linux, MacOS as well as Windows.

Anyone is welcome to use my proxy at jator.2y.net. I'm daisy chained to Clueless, so the blocks will get to Mika via Clueless and I.

I agree, we need to establish certain indiviuals who have access to remote administer the proxies. I am willing to allow certain individuals to my computer if I am unavailable.

Jay, I agree with you, we definately need someone(s) with remote access to the keyservers to keep things going.

PS Mandrill, sorry, but when it falls back, it falls back to the Dnet round-robin.

The webbox will be Win2K, and the proxy WinNT4, so Linux telnet wouldn't work for us.

Clueless, about 50000 blocks are coming your way. Do you have a statsbox that I can check?

Well, I just hate it was so many random's. I don't usually store more than a couple of thousand blocks on my proxy, but, that only lasts a few hours.

Not to mention the fact, that I was out of town this weekend, and couldn't point my proxy somewhere else, or get a bid d/l of blocks from dnet to get me through the drought

I guess I will have to increase my buffers to take this into account in the future, especially over holiday weekends.

Just don't kill clueless pproxy with all that "GIANT SUCKING" of the blocks that you are doing...

Only grabbed a couple of thousand so far, I think the dump will hurt more than anything else

Maybe,

I noticed that even though I dump every 30 minutes, I didn't have anything on Mika's for the last 41 ....

Oh well, they're there somewhere....Someday, they'll make their way home....

When Mika resets this thing, watch out:Q

Considering that Mika hasn't flushed to D.net in over 2 days and has been receiving several hundred thousand blocks per day would suggest that there is going to be a nice "LARGE" dump when reset (or corrected, whatever the term is)...

Who knows, maybe 2 Million blocks for TA for the day is not out of the question then?

Drak,

If you like, you can submit through my proxy at jator.2y.net. I have a stats page for weekly and full stats and right now I am submitting through Clueless so the bloks will get to Mika. When Mika comes back online I'll switch back to directly update through Mika (though I'll increase my block total to hold about 3 days worth of blocks).
