Is my CPU fried?

I just put together an Athlon 1.33 ghz system with an ASUS A7V133 motherboard and I installed the required heatsink and fan. The system started fine and was running with no problems so I decided to up the FSB to 140 mhz and I ran 3DMark2001 for about 8 hours with no problems or lockups. This morning I defragged my hard drive without any problems but when I went to reboot my computer from Win 98, my monitor went into sleep mode and my computer would not reboot. I turned off the power supply switch and pulled the plug several times but the only thing I get now is just my CPU fan and my Northbridge fan coming on for about a second and then they both stop and nothing happens, I can't even get my computer to post. I replaced the power supply and it still does the same thing so that is not it, did I fry my CPU or could there be some other problem? I would appreciate any help, thanks.

Hi,

Sounds like your motherboard has died - do the fans come on but hardly even get a chance to spin? And then you can't reproduce the problem unless you switch off at the PSU and then on again? But the green power status LED lights OK?

This happened to me after I tried the voltage mod, and my MB was dead. I even sent it back to be looked at for repair, but there was not a chance, really, so my advice is to get hold of another MB that you can test your components in.

Probably not fried. If you monitored your temps and they
did not range out of control, you should be alright.

I think the Asus can be set by manual switches. Set it to normal speed.
Pull all cards except video. Take the CPU out and put it back in to make
sure of good electrical contact. Try a different video card if
you have one around.

Some Asus boards automatically reset themselves in case
of certain CPU crashes. At least on the one I have, it
can take several minutes and it seems like it is not
going to boot.

I wouldn't think your system, mobo or cpu, fried given that it was running fine and all you did was reboot. But KF had some good suggestions and I'd try that. The one further thing I'd suggest is to short CMOS as well, my KK266 mobo gave the same symptons yours is and clearing CMOS did the trick.

Good luck,

Darn! Ian, that's exactly what's happening! How can the green LED light be on and the fans spin yet the mobo is fried? Unfortunately, I don't have access to another mobo so I don't know if it is it. I'll try the suggestions from the other poeple like clearing my CMOS and setting my speeds with the switches but what you described is exactly what is happening. I don't see how it could get fried with a soft reboot though????? Thanks for the help and wish me luck!

I was playing with my Duron 750 & Asus A7M266 board last night, similar thing happened, clock speed was set to 900mhz and restarted the system. It never came alive since.

How do you clear the cmos? I took off the battery, but still won't work.

Anyway, I will try the external FSB adjuster tonite.

Same problems with epox...i didn't know what the problem was cause disassembled everything and put everything back in my computer. All i did was put everything back too the default settings on the mobo and then...i gave the side of my case a good slap and "C'mon you bastard". I guess it needed some disciplining cuz it booted up! Although i knew i did something to my mobo cuz one of the 3 pin connectors on my mobo for the chassis fan will not work. If all else fails...give it a good slap.

Definitely cealr the CMOS first. Are you sure the motherboard isnt shorting itself out against the case?

Personally, I doubt if your chip is fried. More likely is that your system is OC'd too much. I have also run benchmark programs "successfully" over an extended period of time, only to find that I couldn't subsequently boot up. The solution was to clear the CMOS such that I could get back into the bios again and lower my settings. With my Duron/MSI combination: pounding/holding down the 'insert' key right after powering on was sufficient to clear CMOS such that machine could boot and I could access bios. Hope this maybe of some help.

Try what SiRu suggested--the insert key trick has worked for me many times. It usually doesn't change any .values in my bios but does make it boot at the default bus and multiplier. It's saved me many times.
