Is my hardrive dying?

I have 2 IBM GXP 75's in RAID 0. At, times, when accessing the HD, I hear two clicks followed by 4 series of
"scratching" like sounds. This repeats a couple of times (maybe 10) then the machine restarts. I tried running scandisk, it hung like this at 62,409 of 1,278,924
then continued. It hung again at 211,913 of 1,278,924 and then restarted. I can run scan disk sucessfully on my "D" partition (I just have two). The drives are only about 4 months old. Any ideas? TIA
My system is as follows:
AMD 1 GB, 256 MB PC133, Win 98, ABIT KT7A RAID

Just to reinforce what CRV said - BACK-UP NOW!

You need to download IBMs Drive Fitness Test and run that in Advanced mode, that should tell you whats wrong and if necessary give you an RMA number.

If the HDD is going to go (you can check this via Scandisk as follows), you should see the following. More & more "hangs", as new clusters get marked as BAD. This is a pretty solid tell-tale sign.

If need be, get the drive RMA-ed. It might be that the drive was bounced (i.e.: "mishandled" during transport) or something to that effect. Tends to leave a solid "scratch" of bad-clusters along the HDD (if it doesn't cause a head-crash straight away) which just gets progressively worse & worse (i.e.: more & more bad clusters).

Downloaded and ran the Drive Fitness Test. It reported, "One Or More Bad Sectors Found" "Failure Code 0X70 Defective Device" It also said to "run Erase Disk to repair the drive" It sounds like formatting, but I guess this HD is toast? Thanks for the help.

ok dude I think first you find from some friend the Norton Utilities and check your HDD for any BAD sectors or anything. I think you should run all the tests of the programe it is a great one. Onother thing - If it is only 4 months old you should still have the guearntie for it so why don't you go to the shop or the firm where you bought it and ask them for help. I know it is a long process but it is an option. ;-]

Back up now, I have an ibm 45 gig 75gxp, and it has been makin the same noises, and she is dying. No questions ask, my drive and yours are going to be gone in not too long. If you read www.storagereview.com this is a common problem amongst the 75gxp drives. Sorry.

AARRGGHH!! I can't back up. It locks up no matter how many or how few mb's I try to save. I do have Norton's, I'll try running that. What a pi$$er, I just got back from vacation last night and downloaded all the pics from my digital cam. I can't save them not to mention anything else!:|:disgust::frown::Q

I just lucked out, sort of. Partition D was not showing any problems so I started moving folders to that partition. When I tried to move my pictures folder, it locked up and made the noise. So, I started moving pictures one by one. When I tried to move a certain picture, it locked up. So I moved everything I needed except that pic and was able to burn my files onto a couple of CD's. So it looks like I haven't lost anything irreplaceable but I am still in for a big inconvenience. I don't even want to use IBM's after reading the problems others reported at storagereview.com. Thanks for the heads up.
