It depends. It depends mostly on what you do with your comp and your comp specs. Say, if you get real laggy gameplay but you have a great video card and 256mb of ram, OCing isn't going to help. Also, if you just surf the web or type word docs, listen to music, etc., OCing isn't going to help either.

And remember, whether the parts stay cool or not, sending extra voltage through it will shorten the life of that part, guaranteed.

The stock cooler isn't actually that bad, since the chip runs cool to begin with. On a stock cooler, I'd stick with at most a 10% overvolt, which should be more than enough to squeeze 95% of the chip's ability out of it anyway. Higher voltage than that tends to give back very little.

Just monitor your temps. As long as you aren't hitting 50C load while overclocked, you're doing great. I try to keep my temps below 50C at load.

Just get a Opteron. I've been reading a lot about them and it seems they are good for OCing. I dont know about the longevity of OCing Opterons.

I would try to see what you get a default vcore..that is free speed increase and there should be 0 risk

Who'd keep a gaming rig for more than a year without upgrading the majority of the parts?

I know I have at least one update a year..

...i think

not always- I had to put the voltage up to 1.65 on my venice 3000 to hit that!
