I hated Warcraft 3 so by that metric its been dead to me for a while now.

But Act of War and World in Conflict have been keeping me happy. I am not currently looking forward to anything. I have all the Total Wars from steam and slowly been working through them.

Odd. I still like warcraft 3 : TFT better than SC2 HOTS. The hero added an entirely new dimension to warcraft 3 and led to some very cool, very interesting battles. Also it was less one dimensional than SC2...when you watch a SC2 tournament at a certain point you know the outcome. Item collection and heroes added an entirely new dynamic in WC3: TFT which is sadly missing in SC2. I remember having my base nearly destroyed in one FFA game of WC3: TFT and I used my ranger hero to possess enemy units slowly and sneak around the map. I still lost but having those interesting hero dynamics added a lot of fun IMO.

Don't get me wrong, I like SC2 as well. But I really loved WC3/WC3: TFT. Such great games. They also had fantastic single player campaigns....talking about it makes me want to go back and give it another playthrough to be honest.

SC2 is basically a build order and combat micro game. Sure you need to macro to make sure your not letting your resources build too high and reinforce your armies but that's the smaller part of the game army micro/base denying is the name of the game.

I disagree. I would say macro is much more important. You can get pretty high by not having little to not micro but great macro. The opposite isn't really true.

You can tell from the warcraft players that move over to SC2. They are always way too focused in micro and have lackluster macro, so they don't do well. Macro is the foundation that must be built first, and micro can be played on top of that.

I like they focus more on combat and less on base building. As someone once pointed out many games calling themselves RTS's are really just exercises in city management or resource management.
Star Craft 1 and 2 are prime examples. If you dont figure out the absolute best most efficient way of managing your fledgling war factory then you are screwed in the end game cuz there isnt much in the way of real tactics.

World In Conflict goes to the extreme cuz there is no city management. You get forces and you have to accomplish objectives. Thats it.

There are a lot of tactics you can use in SC2. I've seen miraculous comebacks because of it.

The Myth series was great, of course the single player was amazing but the MP was great as well. I was always amazed at how much effectively microing your units in Myth could totally turn the tides of a battle, if you let your trow get surrounded by berserks he would get destroyed but if you managed it right your trow could kill like half their force. I still remember playing tons of FFA games on mudpit madness back in the day when I had crappy netzero dial up.

RTS is dead, with the exception of SC2. The games you guys are all listing, DOW2, COH, etc. etc. are all RTT games with little to no basebuilding, or in the case of the Total War series, Turn based with RT fighting.

While I like RTT games, and love the Total War series, they are not RTS in the traditional base building sense. If you looking for an modern RTS game, and don't like starcraft, then you are out of luck. Might as well wait for Planetary Annihilation. I was looking forward to Generals 2 until they made it F2P....

I call anything where you gather resources, build armies, etc an RTS. Let's not have a philosophical debate on what is or isn't an RTS.

Turn based and Real time are two fundamentally different types of games. An RTS is an RTS, a turn based game by definition cannot be RTS.

If you want to argue that both are strategy games, you would not be incorrect - but if you look at the very title of this thread it refers to real time strategy. Again, turn based games are not real time. Obviously. They are two different categories of games which play quite differently.
