Is Seagate a godawful company?

I had two WD Greens fail in short time. WD has their bad drives as well.

If you follow BackBlaze's stats, the 2TB, 3TB and 6TB Greens/Reds are suspect.
The 4TB seems pretty reliable though and my own sample size (~12x) seem to reflect that as well.

Yeah, mine were 2TB ones. It's enough to make you not trust them, especially when their warranties are crap.

Oh, the 8TB Reds are excellent as well.
Cheating though since it's basically a WD Red sticker on a 5400rpm HGST UltraStar He8.

I'm more worried about the heat these generate under load and their overall reliability. A five-year warranty is nice, but there is no effective way to back this up without a duplicate harddrive

Reliable or not, you need a duplicate backup drive. No matter how reliable a drive is or how cool you keep it they all eventually fail and take your data with them. You have to plan for that inevitability.

and who knows, maybe the shipping crate, his hard drive came in was dropped from a forklift, who knows..I have worked in a factory i have seen it happen :/
