All i do is go on aim, surf the web ALOT, dont play any games on the computer, have alot of things open at the same time and download/install alot of stuff for my computer. A dell would seem perfect for what i want to do. I want something reliable, that i can keep for awhile, that wont crash alot, that is PRETTY FAST PLEASE, and good customer support. i have owned dells before, never a refurbished one. Now y not buy a refurbushed dell from a reliable computer company (IMO and my experience, despite what alot here say).

If it was a refurb from a less reputable company, I'd definitely discourage that, but Im sure dell does refurbs well.

I got a refurbished Dell 3 years ago. It ran perfectly except for a cd drive that went bad. They replaced it with minimal hassles, and everything was fine thereafter.

That computer looks like it will serve your needs well.

Is it a good computer? Of course not. That processor runs hot, the video card is painfully crippled, the innards are typical OEM budget quality, and it comes with a bunch of crap pre-loaded. Is it sufficient for your purposes? Yes, easily. You'll be perfectly fine with it.

First, though: what's wrong with your current computer? I'd think nearly anything would be able to handle what you wanted.

Why does it matter if the proc runs hot?

A dell will not throttle.
1. "A Dell will not throttle"? I take it you didn't hear about Dell's (Prescott-equipped) workstation computer problems.

2. Hotter-running systems will dump more heat into the room. This is especially important if the OP lives in a warm area, has a poorly ventilated room, or just can't afford any more heat being dumped into the air conditioning system.

3. The system will get clogged with dust over time, and even with a properly designed quiet mainstream OEM box it won't take long before it DOES throttle under load.

4. A hot OEM system is more likely to experience serious stability issues if a single fan goes.

Again, though, he'll be fine. The tasks he wants his computer to perform could be easily done by a low-end P3 with the same amount of memory, so he won't have to worry about loading the processor too heavily.

Overpriced tiny little computer! If you don't play game, then get the Emachine with integrated video.

Stability is a function of the software you put in. Garbage in, garbage out. Download/install a lot of craps = formula for constant reload of the OS.

DELL support STINKS!

DO NOT BUY
DO NOT BUY
DO NOT BUY

Dude my Dell refurb died on me in less then a few months. I was not feeling too happy about it. No, the mainboard was full of cockroaches, and it smelled very bad, plus the optical drives were so oldschool that WinXP didn't even allow the comp to multitask.

Plus, you know what!! Support sucks!

Don't buy that peice of crap.

Yeah, Dell is cheap, but I'm slowly liking computers from such places like eMachines better. The Intel Prescott just isn't good wherever it's put.

I'm running right now off a "new" refurbished lappy from dell and the thing is awesome. I have also just dealth with their service and I was amazinly impressed. Maybe it was because it was the "Education" number I dialed, but they were very helpful and friendly.

"Its not even an intel computer!"
Intel makes CPU's, not computers. And you're crapping on an Athlon 64 3400, with a system price of $599.

"Doesnt even turn on barely"
OK, so you've already established you dont know anything about eMachines or computers in general.

Dude, seriously, get whatever you like. With your knowledge you'll either be happy with anything, or pissed off at everything. It wont matter to you.

I ask again.. what's wrong with your current computer? What are its specs? It might just be too clogged with spyware, there could be no actual need to buy anything new.

Oops, after doing a forum search I found out why you want a new computer. I guess that's a good reason, although if it was working before then local tech repair should still be cheaper than getting a new one.

That eMachines is in fact a better computer overall, but it has XP Media Center Edition on it. Also, you really don't NEED a fast computer at all. You'd be fine getting a P3, tbh, but I guess you can't buy one new.
