XP Media Center is for integration of the operating system with your TV tuner and such. Makes watching and recording TV more seamless.

well compared to the dell in the OP, it has a better processor, a dvd burner, and uses only 1 512 chip instead of 2x256.

brand means nothin in OEMs. its all about the parts they use. its not like dell or emac makes any of their own parts. they are all just using parts from other companies.

As tech who had to fix the old horrible Emachines of the past and swore every minute when doing so I have to say yes its better. Dell spends alot on case design, E-machines doesn't but they have a basic design that is ver open easy to work on and provides enough cooling for almost everything. They have been using better parts (compared to early in their history) and have stopped loading their computers with crap. Besides all of that we are talking about purchasing a refurb vs. a new computer. Yes the refurb is dell and it means something but its still a refurb and if you can get a new machine cheaper i recommend it. All things considered they are the best machines on a buget and are only beaten by more expensive dells in quality and actually sit better then a HP, Compaq, Acer, or any other cost effective machine.

big ben,

don't listen to fatty4ksu whatever you do. hes an infamous intel fanboy that offers advice which completely wrong. check out the fourm isssues fourm and you will se ea bunch of fourms that want to ban him.

If that emachine was equipped with an intel processor, ill bet he would not way anything about it.

its very easy to work on, that doesnt help me! i dont want to have to be worried about a computer being easy to open! And we are not talking about a refurb, think of a new dell 4700or 3000 versus those two emachines

I've never really liked Dells, but they often have some really good deals, like free LCD's with their systems. It's hard not to bite.

so emachines has come a long way.. hmm, im still afraid of what i have seen before. however if u guys have emachines and say it is better then i may trust u guys. they may be stocked with good parts, but maybe they end up running baadly? --or is that just impossible?

hows customer support?

Easy to work on mean less compact design and more open design which equals better air flow and therefore cooler and potentially more stable design. You should pay more attention to what peole are saying instead of finding the one statement that might scare you off. Just because i said they are eaier to work on doesn't throw away the other things i have stated.

Any ways a refurb could and probably means it has broken before. While generally on a computer replacing the suspect part takes care of it. But the potential for repeat failure is going to be higher on a refurb. Now would you if you had a chance to get a neon or cavlier (both cheap get the job done cars) would get the New neon that is cheaper or the used cavalier that had its engine replaced and is more expensive.

the problem with ure analogy is that most people have dells, but most people dont have neon/cavaliers. haha, but um yea i get ure point.

So u said u worked on emachines, the older crapbox ones, and now are saying that the emachine dekstop computers, the two i mentioned are better then the dell dimension 3000 an dell dimension 4700? hmm

AND IM NO LONGER GETTING A REFURB, ITS A NEW DELL OR NEW EMACHINES FROM WHAT I HAVE HEARD HERE.

you also said that the parts they use now are better then what they used to use, which scares me because what they used to use was defiantly crap, is this just a tad bit better crap?

those 2 emachines that were linked to are better than the dell from the OP. i'm sure there is a configuration in the 4700 lineup that will be better than it and if you get it on a good coupon it could become a better deal than the 2 emachines, but as it is the 2 emachines are better than the dell you posted.

Realize that the Dementia 3000 line cannot accept an AGP or PCI-Express video card.

I don't know where to begin. The CPU is in both machines is better, the cheapest one has a hard drive 4 times larger and 2 times the memory (the fastest has 5x the HDD room and 4x the memory)

Even the absolute cheapest emachine (EMachines T3990) is better then that Dell.

yes the emachine is better. you'd need at least a p4 3.0-3.4 with 512mb-1GB of ram with a DVD-RW drive to be better.
