Is this a motherboard problem?

Have an HP6540C that has a problem. This computer will boot to Windows just fine when started cold, problem is if it is shut down and restarted after it is warmed up it will power up the board but not IDE drives such as hard drive or cd-rom. Now here is the strange thing, after restarting warm. I can remove the IDE cable from the hard drive and it will spin up.

I have replaced most everything except memory.

When I recently had this problem it was the power supply.

Perplexed me for days.

Thanks for the reply jadinolf, I thought about the power supply eventhough I had installed a new one as these little 100 watt jobs are just so under powered. I had a new 400 watt psu so I hooked it up, there was little noticeable improvement.

OK.

With mine it sometimes recognized the ide devices and would load to windows. When it didn't recognize them, of course it wouldn't.

I replaced the power supply and have not had a problem since.

No one said that fixes have to make sense
