My friend's wife's note reads:"a POP, then burning smell", "Tim replaced power supply, sounds like it's running but no picture on screen".
Yeah, I know, the "magic smoke" got let out and can't be put back in again. I think it's dead. but their "guru" son in law in another state thinks there is just "a wire loose somewhere". So I said I'd check. uhhhh...
Just in case, though, I have: taken it out of the case, tried "known good" p/s, vid card, dimms and processor, as well as triple checking all jumpers. This is one of those "Pentium through AMD K62-400" boards with 15 or 20 jumpers to set. I have checked them all when I swapped out the processors. (ECS P5SS-ME)
At it's most promising time, the system wouldn't post but processor (known good K-300) fan did run, when I put back in the original processor, the p/s fan and the processor (K62-400) fan start but shut down again in 10-20 secs.
I'm not getting past post. NO BEEPS. If I "enable keyboard power-on", I get a green light for a sec on the keyboard, but that's as close to a sign of life as I've gotten so far.
I'm ready to call it's time of death now...unless there is something I've overlooked.
Thanks,
Yeah.
