Is WiFi bad for gaming?

I have a laptop with an Netgear 11G PCCard and a Netgear 11G router, and am thinking of bringing my desktop PC online with wireless. Not to sound like an idiot, but I've heard that WiFi is prone to latency problems and should not be used for a gaming PC. My internet connection is a 768/128 Verizon DSL, but I'd be gaming more through a LAN than online.

Is it a smart choice to go ahead and get the Motorola PCI card that I'm thinking of? Or will it completely send my latency to hell?
