My 14yo daughter iTouch 4g she got for Xmas was stolen at her high school. The curious part of the ordeal was it happened in the girls locker room. She said someone broker her combination master lock and took the iTouch and the lock. She is so bummed and could not sleep all night. I told her hope she learns her lesson that there are thieves ou there.

Anyway I can track her iTouch? .

I hate thieves

"Hope you learned your lesson" is a little bit odd to say when it sounds like she wasn't careless at all with it... locked with a padlock in a locker? Seems like she had a pretty reasonable expectation that it was safe.

You just taught your daughter to trust no one. Bravo. I feel the same way.

Yea but if it was the gym locker she was probably doing sports or swimming or something where it could've gotten damaged by water or crushing, right?

I told my daughter she absolutely was not taking hers to school at any time. She thought I was a monsterous dickhead and ranted for days. Then her friend's iPhone was stolen (who the F gives an 11 year old kid an iPhone anyway)... haven't heard a peep out of her since.

I'd rather her think I'm a dick now than deal with how she would feel if it was stolen later.

point taken. However there was a string of break ins lately in the locker room and I told her to be cautious. I told her to keep it with her at all times. another thing that bothers me is this school is at a middle class area.

Find my iDevice should technically work with the iPod Touch, but if you haven't set it up beforehand then it's too late. Even then, it's really meant for cellular devices such as the iPhone and cellular-enabled iPads, as without an always-on data connection and GPS the service isn't particularly useful (and a smart thief will wipe the phone).

The first rule of school lockers: nothing is safe. They're trivial to break into, and much like a lock on a car door it's only meant to discourage casual theft.

This is why I do not put a PIN code on my devices. I want to encourage the thief to keep using it. That way, I can successfully track it with the FindMyiPod service.

Log-in with her Apple ID. Locate.

[edit]
If its unlocked, and the thief is using it, DO NOT tip-off the thief with a message or remotely-added PIN. DO NOT remote-wipe if you want any chance to get it back (unless there is sensitive stuff on there and you and keeping it away from other people is worth more to you than the cost of the iPod). Change all passwords for email and Facebook. For services that give you the option, reset session IDs for cookies that keep your device logged-in (Facebook and Google let you do this). DO NOT change the Apple ID password. I'm not sure, but I think it would block you from tracking your device.

True, but that's assuming the thief didn't wipe it right away after it was stolen...

Plus if it's not connected to wifi there's really no way for it to be tracked (at least on an iPod touch.)

Stupid thieves! I'm guessing you have the serial number... watch for anyone using an iPod touch and if it turns out to be the same one with the same serial number, take it back/have your daughter get that kid in trouble.

Problem solved!

How does one wipe it?

Settings, general, reset, erase entire iPod and settings

Or hook it up to a computer and restore it... either way it wipes out everything on the iPod.

If it's got a passcode on it, just put it into recovery mode and restore it... wipes everything off of it.

They're a lot less likely to wipe it when it has no PIN and seems to work fine. Generally, thieves (especially young ones) are pretty dumb.

I will give you that one... I deal with iDevices all day long so that would be my first thought but to a dumb teenage thief I'm sure they would just be happy about their thievery.

Like most have already you can try the find my iPhone app. More than likely the thief knows this and already wiped the device.

There was a similar story by my local high school. A hall monitor was breaking into lockers and stealing things. I believe a student set up a trap and caught her on camera.

Did you file a police report and report it to school authorities?
Was it purchased with a cc that offers purchase protection ?

One would need a bolt cutter to break a combination lock or the actual combination. I would pursue this with the authorities as there is a thief in that school.

Will do the police and apple store today. school authorities on monday. I can't imagine kids bringing bolt cutter but I won't be surprise.

Sorry OP, I don't mean to be rude or thread-crap but why does a 14yr old need such an expensive phone?, I still use a Samsung flip-phone that works fine(well, except for texting anyway). If it get lost, stolen, damaged it's $25 for a new one. Apple products are always targets for low-life's, the first day she brought it to school the baddies took notice..
