"You guys need to stop the BS with the mods now. I am getting very, very tired of it.

Statements like that (from a deleted thread) are a slap in the face. It's not like posters are messing with the mods for no reason or acting in a vacuum. A lot of the BS from posters comes because users are tired of a sharp uptick in arbitrary/inconsistent/douchebag moderating from the mods.

If you mods are tired of users, it can't be that hard to stop being a mod. I know it hasn't been hard to greatly reduce my visits to AT forums since the moderating has been going to hell.

On the other hand, there's always plenty of people and activity here. So the moderation practices are either working, or enough people don't care.

on the other hand, i wonder if the mods are getting worried about the number of complaints. there seems to be a lot lately. and jTanked, the activity here is nothing compared to what it was years ago.

jTanked - your joined date is recent enough that Ima take your input with a grain of salt. JohnCU is correct that there used to be a LOT more activity here.

Fail. Users are purposely doing what they know is Bannable. There are better ways to complain about Moderation.

People are indeed purposefully doing what they know is bannable out of annoyance for the ridiculous moderating and flimsy reasons given.

Whether or not that is the best way to complain is immaterial (obviously I think one better way is to post in PFI), and is not relevant to the issue that moderating has changed for the worse and the moderators' pretense of innocence and non-involvement with the rash of poor behavior is disingenuous.

That was me that posted. It's only a slap in the face if you're one of the abusers of the mods. I am getting tired of mod callout threads. They are against the rules and if it continues, I will continue to vacation and ban until it stops. Is that hard to understand?

And that thread you referenced in which Chort was banned? That was one of the most despicable threads I have seen here at the forums. :disgust:

If you mods are tired of users, it can't be that hard to stop being a mod.

I am not tired of the members, I am tired of certain select members continuing to post bullshit about the mods. 99+% of the membership are a joy to deal with. It's the <1% that causes 90% of the work we do here.

I did not wish to call attention to you or to the thread. I don't believe I am an abuser of the mods, and I still took it as a slap in the face. Whether or not that's how you intended it, I don't know.

I think at heart is that I'm just growing more and more dissatisfied with the moderating and frustrated that the moderators act as if they do nothing wrong. I believe the "abuse of moderators" has been increasing because others feel the same way I do.

Protip: If you see a Mod Post something that you think is inappropriate, contact AnandtechModerator about it. I recently did just that and the situation was solved/corrected in 20ish minutes.

The problem I really have with all these callouts is that Posters are doing it in situations that are almost always clearly within acceptable posting parameters. They just disagree with the as-Poster posting Mod and can't help trying to fire back at them by using a Shame tactic. If I as just regular Poster had posted the same post as the Mod in these situations, no Mod would have intervened and no Poster would havve thought twice about it.

The Mods when posting as a Member are not some Uber Poster requiring a Priest like decorum. They are simply Members like the rest of us.

1. Agreed. Most of the time things can be cleared up quickly that way.

2. don't know what you are saying

3. True except that there have been many situations where if they were "simply members" like the rest of us they'd have been gone. If you'd like proof, I can go find plenty of examples from an archive from back in the day... I think the problem here is that many people see a "blue wall of silence" type thing going. I know that's my opinion and I have plenty of evidence to back it up.

I don`t think it matters at all if your an abuser of the mods or not...I don`t even think it matters. What matters is that you do NOT call a mod out in any way, shape or form.
That is just plain wrong to do so!!

Peace!!

Does it occur to you that when there seems to be a sudden spike in "mod callouts", that maybe, just maybe, something you and your brethren have done has caused it? Or do you think that a dozen or more long-standing members just suddenly decided, for no reason whatsoever, to try pissing you all off?

Eh, I think people give the mods too much crap here. If they do X, people complain. If they dont do X, people complain.

Ive of course seen my share of a mod overstepping, (in only a year or so) but where in life have you ever seen perfection?

is this thread even necessary?

I treat all mods like any other poster: with respect.

If you disagree with a mod about something then act like an adult and discuss it rationally. How difficult is that?

Here's an idea: how about everyone try treating everyone else with some respect and courtesy? Its fine to disagree and argue, but it seems so many of us devolve into fits of extreme insults and name calling. Dudes, its only a forum.

So in conclusion I would like to say: just relax and grow a thicker skin and can't we all just try to get along?

People are getting banned for making jokes.
That has nothing to do with respect for mods and other forum members.

You're new so you dont know any better, but this place used to be a lot MORE active back in the good old days.
I wont deny I am one of the major assholes here on Anandtech, but banning people just for being silly and joking is a little odd on a forum that makes money from its traffic.

Respect is earned and is very hard to earn back once lost.

You are seriously mistaken! When somebody is appointed a mod, they should not have to "earn" your respect.
They should get immediate respect!
If they screw up, you don`t confront them in public.
You also don`t confront them in this forum.
You follow the guidelines for reporting mods.
If you have issues with the results...you have two choices...
iether suck it in and go about your buisness or find another site to hang out at.

They're not getting banned for just jokes - they are getting banned for joking about domestic violence and violence against women, which isn't funny and people should be vacationed for.

And they should be vacationed especially now that it has been made known that those types of jokes are not acceptable.

Ah, but what you are missing is that the initial "respect" is due to the status of authority. Once and authority does something to lose respect - it is very difficult to EARN it back. The status does not EARN them everlasting respect if they do things and continue to do things that cause people to lose respect for them.

As to the later part - there have been many conversations about this and yes, NOW the most appropriate way is to PM the Mod account or Derek, but before it seems as the roost was ruled by a different person - a person many had issues with due to his nature and actions. There was NO way to deal with it other than in public. I for one am glad things have changed and that it is possible to get things resolved in private, but it just wasn't possible in the past.

Wrong, respect can only be given and it's given to those who earn it.

If not then respect is a useless term that can be given to anyone of authority for no reason what so ever.

That said, there need to be rules and when someone does not follow them there needs to be consequences for that.

Many people here feel that the rules do not need to apply to them.

So when the Mods crack down, they complain and feel that it is unfair.
Yet, they have over and over seen that the Mods do not tolerate certain types of behavior; but those idiots keep on doing it.

this is a macrocosm of society; just because you are an electronic person, does not mean that you can ignore the rules of this society. If they were to translate such attitudes into the real world, they could be in for a big surprise. People in the real world do not tolerate idiots very well.

So, it may be that those that act like idiots here are wise enough to not do it in the real world or they have not been exposed to the real world.

When did OT become a forum full of lame ass pussified social rejects who think making unfunny stupid jokes about violence to women is cool? For the record I'm not going to vacation anybody for it unless it's so outrageous it's a given because I'm not here to moderate common sense which seems to be lacking in so many of you bung headed self absorbed children.
