No not the Change of Culture thread!!!!

This thread is a perfect example of how you can bring up your complaints as long as you aren't singling out a specific Moderator i.e. a Mod Call out.

Well, I think that's the problem with mods being known, i.e. posting funny (to them) comments while doing a ban. To me, mods should be invisible - you shouldn't know about a mod's "personality" through his bans (i.e. "Oh oh, mod x is going slam the ban hammer - you know how he is about penis polls!").

I think mods shouldn't be witty with their actions.. or forceful..or "I'm not going to let you make me do more work, i'm not your mom or slave" sorta talk. It's unprofessional and just rubs me the wrong way.

You only get the level of service that you pay for...

The mods here are paid what exactly? their annual salary is how much?

Why do people who just support the status quo exist?

Also, I've volunteered to build websites for non-profits and NEVER have I allowed myself to behave less than professionally, saying "it's not like I'm getting paid!"

While a lot of work, building a website for a charity isn't the same job as being a mod at at forum this active. As to "professional behavior" that's why I quit the very vocal pieces of human trash while fairly small in number who post here weren't worth my effort.

It's funny - I think it's the mods (some of them) that take things far to personally, not just the users. I mean, you just called your user base "TRASH!" It's very, very weird that the mods here have such a visible role, while most forums/blogs/communities with far more volume have far less issues like this, and the moderation is done quickly, professionally, and with little commentary.

What's so wrong about the mods just sticking to locking illegal/spam/explicit threads without trying to shape the conversation?

Being that this site's thrust is all about computers, keeping Off topic clean enough to be viewed at work was an important goal. Thread topics discussing penis size, length of turds and other raw materials are viewed as not work place safe by many.

You drive away the cube dwellers and you're left with what as a member base? I'll tell you, they're not people with any interest in purchasing much in the way of hardware or software.

Since you seem to have inside knowledge, what's the point of not allowing explicit language in the thread titles it being ok to curse in the actual post? If it's to keep the content SWF, well, how does an workplace filter know the difference between a title and a post?

I have no problem stating very openly and very plainly that there is a small portion of the membership
who are basically the human equal of pond scum that delight in inflicting a very special brand of misery on mods
and other members alike.

Mods take things "personally" because some pretty personal and low blow stuff has been done to them over the years.
I quit because I didn't feel this place or the people in it were worth it, if you feel differently and think giving up hours and hours
time only to be repaid with a nice tasty , shiat sandwich for your troubles is worthwhile perhaps you should do that.

I think if Anand were wise, he'd close down Off topic entirely.. it would end a lot of problems.

The biggest problem at a lot of cube dwellers jobs isn't websense filters, it's more the fact that co-workers and team leaders might happen to look over
at your screen at any moment and see subject titles that look less than kosher.

Speaking of personalities, I'm starting to see a trend here with you.

Whatcha gonna do, tough guy, ban me?

----
Red may not, but I will if you keep it up. Remember what happened in the movie that quote is from? The character asking 'Whatcha gonna do, tough guy' got the crap kicked out of him. Drop the baiting unless you want to be called on it.

The reason that threads like this are allowed is because, believe it or not, we are here for YOU. To GB's comment earlier, we work our asses off and the only thing we get back is b!tching from a few, and that gets quite old after a few years. In reality, the membership decides what should be moderated or not and Derek, the Admins and Senior's 'translate' that into rules and guidelines all mods follow. No matter where the line is, someone will always be on the other side of it.

As long as this thread remains civil, and does not degenerate into a large 'let's see who can get away with what in PFI' thread, it will remain open, unlocked, and without sanction. Cross that line, and we will have issues. Bring forward thoughts, ideas, and constructive criticism and I can guarantee that the mods and admins will listen as long as humanly possible.

Wouldn't anonymous moderation help with that? What if moderation was just done - posts locked, people banned - without the commentary of moderators (or just factual moderation - i.e "THREAD LOCKED - ILLEGAL FILE TRADING"). Wouldn't that reduce the personal flames?

There's an old arabic saying that roughly translated reads

"women want toasted ice"

that statement could very easily be edited to read "atot members want toasted ice"

Well your last post to me could be construed as Mod Baiting, I'm betting that's how Dave took it and if he did he was actually pretty lenient as that's one thing we are very strict and in agreement about and it usually results in a short vacation. Sometimes the message gets lost in the translation and if you would have been sanctioned for it a short PM to the Mods would have cleared it up.

A lot of this thread is just personal preference and complaining about something that isn't too big an issue.

I say we mod-users and users unite to bring working vB to AT. Fellow ATers, I come to you in the wake of this thread to issue a call to reason. Let one here deny the perils of this time on AnandTech. While we battle one another, divided by the petty strife of our common history, the tide of a greater conflict is turning against us, threatening to destroy all that we have accomplished. It is time for us as mods and as users to set aside our long-standing feuds and unite. The tides of an unwinnable war are upon us, and we must seek refuge upon higher ground, lest we be swept away by the flood.

From this day forward, let no AT user complain about any other AT user. Let no AnandTech agency conspire against this new beginning. And let no man consort with the mainsite administration. And to all the enemies of AT, seek not to bar our way, for we shall win through, no matter the cost!

Aye, fight and we may get banned. Keep silent and you'll be able to continue to post -- at least a while. And dying in your beds many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance to come back here and tell the AT administration that they may ban our accounts, but they'll never take our freedom!

Email Anand! Tell him we need help instituting vB! Tell him the cost, the cost this craptacular darkness that is FuseTalk is inflicting on us below in this vast, but dwindling, realm. Arise, arise, users of AnandTech! Fell deeds awake: neffing and bannage! Code shall be rewritten, server shall be dismantled, a post-day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Email now, email now! Email for the switch, and the ending of FuesTalk! AnandTech! AnandTech! Forth users of AnandTech!

Why is racism all of a sudden allowed with Obama being President?

Please provide what you feel are examples and they will be looked at.

I spend a lot of time in P&N as well as CC, i don't see any significant racism at all, and if someone does they get called on it lightning fast.

It's an Obama love fest in P&N...

I've already had my "I'm packing up my little red tricycle and leaving" moment here, and of course I was back a month later, so I like to think I've put some thought into how I think the forums are being run these days. There's a few problems I see

#1. Derek's in charge in name, but not in practice. This is killing things, because the answer to a lot of legitimate problems has been "talk to Derek" and then....nothing happens. Shockingly enough. I like Derek, I'm NOT here to bash him, but he's just not here. He's already got plenty on his plate so if the forums aren't his priority, someone else with less other stuff to do should be here running things.

#2. The "99% of people are fine but the other 1% really screws everything up" thing goes BOTH WAYS. The few people who constantly try to cause trouble I'm sure are responsible for virtually all the work the mods have to do, but there's 2-3 Mods here whose name is CONSTANTLY popping up in complaint threads here. They're giving the rest of the mods here a bad name. There's also the problem with the "All mods deserve instant respect" attitude, or the blue wall of silence, or the don't-you-dare-mention-a-specific-mod attitude the rest of the mods have. The problem isn't with the moderation system itself, it's with a few bad apples, and we can't call them out for the problems they're causing because of the idea that's cropped up around here that all the mods are bulletproof. Yes I know we can PM Derek. See problem #1.

#3. It's time to stop clinging to the idea that AT is a hardware-only website. There's tens of thousands of members here and a lot of them do the VAST majority of their posting in off-topic/P&N/whatever. It's wayyyy too late in the game to be claiming this or that thread would fly in a goof-off discussion website but not on Anandtech. Either jettison off-topic into its own website, or start accepting that over the years we've become Offtopic.com JR. I'm in no way saying that we can't keep things a LOT more civil over here than it is over there, but it's just the "This is a hardware website, stop talking about boobs" argument isn't really valid anymore.

Just throwing my two cents in. I'm not speaking as someone who feels persecuted by the mods in the slightest, in fact I'm amazed at some of the shit I get away with here.
