Gettysburg Address.
I had to go bang on my sarcasm meter with a hammer but I'm still not sure of its accuracy. Anyway, Lincoln took office on that date. Still a puzzling date to select in this discussion.

Gettysburg Address.

Did you google?

Well this is what I lot of people asked for. I think it's not going to be what they wanted though. Now that government has taken effective control of health care by pulling the financial strings, it will be interesting to see what regs come from it.

I hope you for one welcome your new overlords

Sorry it was the inaugural address Lincoln gave. It dealt a lot with the tremendous divide in the country.

This is the relevant quote:
I am loath to close. We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.

Edit*. Yes I used google and I welcome my new socialist overlords. Now come here Dr. Rider and give me some healthcare! nom nom nom...

It doesn't, and actually does more to make abortions harder to get, but don't let reality get in the way of your talking point.

Believe what you will but this bill in no way makes it harder, and it very much does allow for gov't monies to pay for abortions. Why do you think there was so much debate in the house? Are you really that stupid? Have you not been paying attention?

What should be very interesting is the fallout (if any) the Democrats will have in Massachusetts in the 2010 elections.

Massachusetts is historically a Democratically controlled state yet it elected a Republican to the Senate who campaigned specifically on being the 41 vote AGAINST health care.

The Democrats stabbed the people of Massachusetts in the back.

If I was in incumbent Democrat, I would be very worried.

It will be a Screw Earth case. How exactly a health insurance mandate freedom? I still haven't hear a single reasoning that made sense beside bs.

And here I thought there was a rule against personal attacks on this forum. Want to step back from the keyboard for a moment and apologize?

I'm sure you are familiar with the National Organization for Women and their stance on abortion. Gee, don't they sound happy.

Care to point out exactly where this bill does that?

`SEC. 2701. FAIR HEALTH INSURANCE PREMIUMS.

`(a) Prohibiting Discriminatory Premium Rates-

`(1) IN GENERAL- With respect to the premium rate charged by a health insurance issuer for health insurance coverage offered in the individual or small group market--

`(A) such rate shall vary with respect to the particular plan or coverage involved only by--

`(i) whether such plan or coverage covers an individual or family;

`(ii) rating area, as established in accordance with paragraph (2);

`(iii) age, except that such rate shall not vary by more than 3 to 1 for adults (consistent with section 2707(c)); and

`(iv) tobacco use, except that such rate shall not vary by more than 1.5 to 1; and

`(B) such rate shall not vary with respect to the particular plan or coverage involved by any other factor not described in subparagraph (A).

`(2) RATING AREA-

`(A) IN GENERAL- Each State shall establish 1 or more rating areas within that State for purposes of applying the requirements of this title.

`(B) SECRETARIAL REVIEW- The Secretary shall review the rating areas established by each State under subparagraph (A) to ensure the adequacy of such areas for purposes of carrying out the requirements of this title. If the Secretary determines a State's rating areas are not adequate, or that a State does not establish such areas, the Secretary may establish rating areas for that State.

`(3) PERMISSIBLE AGE BANDS- The Secretary, in consultation with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, shall define the permissible age bands for rating purposes under paragraph (1)(A)(iii).

`(4) APPLICATION OF VARIATIONS BASED ON AGE OR TOBACCO USE- With respect to family coverage under a group health plan or health insurance coverage, the rating variations permitted under clauses (iii) and (iv) of paragraph (1)(A) shall be applied based on the portion of the premium that is attributable to each family member covered under the plan or coverage.

`(5) SPECIAL RULE FOR LARGE GROUP MARKET- If a State permits health insurance issuers that offer coverage in the large group market in the State to offer such coverage through the State Exchange (as provided for under section 1312(f)(2)(B) of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act), the provisions of this subsection shall apply to all coverage offered in such market in the State.

Why does this country always have to go kicking and screaming into progress? This is the future.

*** NEWS BREAK ***
Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) quoted:
"no.. no.. you miss understood me. I have always supported this healthcare bill all along".

Well.. maybe a fantasy but you know its coming.
How long until the republicans claim they have always totally supported this healthcare reform bill. Just like they "now" claim when it comes to Medicare and Civil Rights.

And from fox news you will no doubt soon hear:
"Senator McCain ... Its well know you have always supported this bill and this reform for the American people, as also your fellow republican congressmen".

I just can not wait for the delusional spin to begin from the republican congressmen/women, up for re election, and from the fox news talking heads.
Especially as Obama's poll numbers climb by double digits within the next few weeks.

And more so... After Obama actually signs the bill into law.
Can you say.. Milk of Amnesia?

Nothing in there about caps. Stop BSing. The whole problem with this bill I hear from my friends at DU is private insurance can charge whatever.

Read it again. It doesn't really matter what your friends say, this is what the bill says.

From HR 3590, house.gov.

So where does it say that rates cannot increase?
It simply point to how much MORE a rate can be for particular illnesses.
All a company has to do is raise its base rate and it can then jack up (by the outlined multipliers) for those other outlined conditions.

What is most troubling is that an insurance company cannot charge a higher rate for someone with a "pre existing condition" yet rates are higher for smokers.

Very hypocritical.

In terms of Federal funding of Abortions, that is one of the deals with the devil the dems were willing to do to pass the bill.

As it is sorry Carlene, no Federally funded abortion for you. If you want an abortion you pay for it out of your own purse.

It doesn't say that a rate cannot increase. It does say elsewhere that x% (around 80) of premium dollars must be used to pay for health care costs, or else members of that insurance pool get refunded the difference.

Furthermore, think about what you are asking for. Do you want the government to place a cap on rates?

As for smoking, it's a choice. Getting sick isn't.

You know, since all the Republicans voted nay anyway, the Democrats could have passed a better healthcare bill that did not include all those concessions to the right. They could have passed single-payer, truly universal healthcare, not this diluted hodgepodge.
