a Radeon 8500 (2nd hand) for £20 (roughly $30). Is that a good deal? I've no idea how much one of these is worth.

I'd be upgrading from my GF4 MX (yuck).

They cost ~£60 new, excluding shipping, so probably something like £65, go for it.

Yes, that is a good deal. Plus it's always nice to have another card laying around in case of troubles and to use for troubleshooting. I would purchase it were I in your shoes.

I quick check on pricewatch.com shows that an OEM 128MB Radeon 8500LE runs about $65. Your call.

Go for it,it's still a great card.

I love my 8500,In BF 1942 it's good & i see no reason to upgrade to something faster yet.

BF1942 is a killer for memory though. I hit 600MB+ when i play desert combat mod. But i remember my old old old R9000Pro would play BF1942 just fine.

$30 is like the base price of a vid card anyway. At newegg, the few cheap ones are built on really old chipsets like the Rage 128. Cards just don't get cheaper than $30 often, so paying that price for a relatively modern card is really nice.

Its at 1/3rd the normal price

it depends on the model

i remember the 64mb 8500LE was about $85, and that was LAST YEAR, i had to choose between it and the GF3 Ti500 for $10 more

and make sure it works and nothing's wrong with it.

That's the best $30 card I've seen yet. Who cares what model it is as long as it works, it'll rip the GF4MX a new one.

I dont see how can you can get that much memory usage, I got 1 gig of ram & tried the latest desert combat mod & at most it was 504megs usage.

maybe overhead stuff you got running , I dunno but with 1 gig it's smooth but i guess 512 megs would be usable too. I dont know, maybe the fact that I have 1 gig makes it diff. I dunno.

My Radeon OEM 64m ddr 8500 use to do 10000+ on my old system in 3dmark2k1se while my gainward golden sample (best GF4mx ocing card, with ram as fast as the 4400ti cards) cranked, and I mean cranked well above normal 440mx levels could only score 6000 in 3dmark2k1se.....A non ocing mx like I also had would only do high 4000's at best, so the difference will be likely very visible....

maybe he plays desert combat and runs seti in the background . seriously, i have 768MB and have seen 590-600 used while gaming in bf. it is a serious memory hog.
