I am taking a Capstone Seminar course that just began. I am planning on developing an application that interacts with MySQL and is written in Java. I was wondering if anyone has any information or links with interacting with MySQL and Java applications?

The other option I have to choose from is using Basic and an Access or Fox Pro (which I am not too familiar with) database. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

Yes, we have no bananas.

VB & Access will probably be easier and better documented. The simplest way of doing it is about 4 steps and takes about 2 hours the very first time you do it, and each time afterward is probably about 10 minutes to have a working db program.
1. set up database (pre-programming step)
2. Figure out your connection string (pre-programming step)
3. Open database connection using connection string (programmatically)
4. Execute your SQL/stored procedure (programmatically)

If you really want to use MySQL and Java, you'll need a MySQL JDBC driver. There are currently two that I know of, and one of them, the mm JDBC Driver, is available at the following link:

http://www.mysql.com/downloads/api-jdbc.html

JDBC is actually just a java package (java.sql.*), so it is very well documented and maintained by Sun. I think JDBC is a great way to do database work. I have used JDBC with MySQL and Oracle, and I think JDBC provides a great way to access these things. Anyway, just my .02.

Also, the setup process would be the same as what Turkey said regardless of which route you take.

Here's a link to JDBC at Sun:

I work w/ Java and Oracle & MySQL now and I'd still say that using VB and access is easier for most small projects.

I'm doing a project now using MySQL and Java. Just get the drivers as pointed out above (I've been using the mm one). Take a look at the tutorials at sun (java.sun.com), they've got a section on using the JDBC (really simple).
