I will allow this thread to stay open providing from now on there is just talk about the deal.
Next threadcrapper gets a vacation, real simple. Again, I apologize for letting this thread get too far out of hand.

Long time lurker first time poster...

Recently our family needed to replace one of the family cars. We currently have 2 boys (5 and 11 months) and were in need of a 7 passenger vehicle (+ Grandma and Grandpa). We were debating on getting a Chrysler Town and Country loaded with goodies and had done some research on the safety of the current crop of vehicles. One evening about a week before we were going to take a trip to the dealer for a test drive my wife confided in me that she did not want to be seen in a mini-van. We are still in our mid 30's and making that step to a Minivan made her feel old! So I started to look around at SUV's and found several deals out there. I found this article on Newsweek that was a great starting point: Newsweek Link.

When I ran across the info that Jeep Commander's were 29% off I about fell out of my chair! I further researched and found that there are a lot of these sitting in dealers showrooms and lots that they are virtually giving away.

Here is the breakdown:

$3500 Rebate
$1750 Incentive
$3250 If you ask your dealer nicely - (Seriously this is what I was offered via email/fax from a "sales manager"!)
EDIT:
I received this today from a local Jeep Dealer:
$2000 more?
and for our nations armed forces personnel:
$500 more?
/end edit

$8500 off of a Commander Sport 4x4 7 passenger! I did not have to step up to a Limited or a Overland! This was too good to be true! I checked other Jeep dealers and I was offered the deal with very little hassle. If you know a Crysler employee you may even do better with a "control number" (friends and family price).

Now I know what you are thinking - What about the gas? Well I eventually decided to get a few more options like the 4.7 V8 (instead of the 3.7 v6) and the 28W options package (Rocky Mountain Edition). I have had it for 3 weeks now and I cannot believe what I stole this for! I have filled it up 2 times (21 Gal. Tank is on the small side) and have been averaging 17 MPG with mostly city driving. I do not have a lead foot and have been practicing a bit of "hypermiling" but the car is awesome!

For those who are looking for something capable in bad weather, or even taking it off road, this is the ticket! For a "family" vehicle it rates high - not as high as a town and country - but you do not look like a soccer mom/dad when driving around. And remember this is a 5 Star rated vehicle.

In the end I cannot believe how substantial this vehicle feels! When the entire family is loaded in (including the in laws) it is very roomy. If I had to nit pick here are my personal dislikes:

Little better mileage (20 would be nice - and from what I hear a performance air filter may do the trick)
3rd row is only for short people or kids (But this is common with 7 passenger SUV's)
Backing up is a pain (Get the backup camera)

Some resources:
Jeep Commander Forums
XK Jeeps
Jeep Commander Blog
Edmuns Long Term Tesing

OK let the tree hugging flaming begin!
FYI the gas mileage on the T&C mini is 16/23 (v6) vs. 14/20 (v8)

What is wrong with someone who is proud of owning a Jeep? Do you even know what a XK is? And besides my original choice was not allowed because of no special symbols allowed. Come on you guys make it hard to be a newbie here. I have posted on many other forums like AVS, Sage TV forums, and The Green Button for years. Why is everyone here giving me Sh1t on a valid deal? Come on more then just computer hardware freaks may have an interest. I remember seeing a very lengthy thread an the SAAB 92x that may have even been started by a person called 92x! WTF???

So I guess that if you are a "lifer" you have no life because you hang out on forums like this accumulating 1000's of posts? I stop by once a week looking for deals. Now I found one that I wanted to share - and give back to the community - but because I do not have 14,000 posts that makes my deal spam...

21 Gal. Tank is on the small side... 17 MPG?

Not to be TC on your deal, but really you should be looking for a better car like a mazda mini van or something ... 22/27 MPG ....

Dunno about you but I am not looking forward to paying 70+ to fill up for 350Mile trip. I am not one to gamble but I'm willing to bet that gas prices are not going anywhere but up in the future....

17 is city driving
22 seems to be what I am getting with pure highway driving - This should be the figure you are using for your 350 mile example.

So you left out your Total Out the Door Prices with taxes and BS... considering you got it 8500 discount @ 30% off what? did you pay 27K for your jeep?

Who was your dealer? What city? What was the name of your manager? Maybe you just got an exception of a deal? I'd at least say this is YMMV. Still I'd never buy a V8...

Well when you load it up with all your stuff, let us know what the True MPG is.... I'll take the 22/27 vs 17/22 anyday.

Hmm... with just the $3500, Edmunds is showing me a TMV of $22,778 on a V6 RWD. If I could actually get another $5k off of that, it would be really tempting.

Sorry it was not started by 92x - But another creative user name "user1234".

WOW I remember that thread, you can see some lengthy posts from me in there about me wanting to buy one. I ended up buying a WRX instead pretty recently

I was very close to getting a 92x also! I ultimately decided on a Escape XLS wih a 4 banger. Can't complain abut the Escape - decent car with decent mileage. Just a bit small for the growing family.

Just emailed a few dealers to see if they would offer the extra $5k off (after the $3250) - 19k for a sport 4wd model isn't too bad!

1. driving a gas guzzler isn't a God-given right;

2. we'll see if this 25% logic is still valid when the gas hits $6 per gallon

3. as a Jeep Wrangler owner, I am never going to own another truck from Jeep ever again. Talk about a crappy quality; I mean they have been making Willy/CJ/YJ/TJ since the beginning of time, right?

Um... mid 30's and she can't be seen in a minivan? I'll let my 30yo wife who has been driving a Dodge Caravan for the last 2 years with our 2 kids know that she needs to feel old now... and I like driving it too. Still prefer the 2dr toy I drive, but it can corner at nearly twice the speed in most spots

1 - Actually it is my rite as a US citizen to buy whatever car I want! Hell they even have a gas guzzler tax passed by our government to allow me to buy a gas guzzler.
2 - You may be correct here - Time will tell.
3 - Sorry about your experience but for every customer who has had a bad experience I am sure there are 100 or more that have had great experiences. This is true with everything in life!

Just because you can do it, doesn't mean you should do it.

Sorry for TC, but Commander is not a good deal, for our country or for your wallet

Don't worry they give you a Lifetime warranty
http://www.jeep.com/en/lifetime_powertrain_warranty/
I believe they are the first in the industry to offer this.

Now for the gas thing....
Look at it this way, this thing can haul twice the people of a car, so we'll just double its mileage to get 28/40 MPG. That?s up there with a Mini.

Just don't drive it with fewer than 6 people and even the tree huggers can't complain.

Who are you to tell me what I can and cannot do! I have saved myself $8500 and made a purchase I am very happy with overall! I have pumped money back into my local economy and supported a car manufacturer that resides here in the US - and puts money back into my local economy (the body panels were stamped in Twinsburg, Ohio). And 85% of the parts used to make my vehicle were made here in the US. And the car was assembled in Michigan! I think I have helped my country in several ways! Plus if you did a little research you would know that the 4.7 is a FlexFuel vehicle. So I am hugging that tree just a little bit. But at the cost of my grocery bill - another wonderful thing treehuggers have done for our economy...

Just one other quick note I checked into 7 passenger hybrids - the Tahoe is a joke! 21/20 - yes that is right 21/20! What a farce!
