I'm posting this for another member who wishes to remain anonymous.

So here's the situation. I have worked for the my current IT company for <5 years, and overall I say things have been very good and I have been quite happy here. However I'm a big advocate of keeping all options open, and keep one eye open for better opportunities. I?ve managed to keep very good relationships with both my former bosses who came into the company and left for other companies during my time here. Both are very fond of me, and have many times approached me to consider leaving to come join them in their various companies.

Well in the last few months things at company have changed, whether it be someone gaining new influence within the management or simply a change of philosophy, things have changed drastically. They seem to have gone from a company that stood up and by their engineers come hell or high water, to a company that is willing to roast, and deep fry engineers in order to kiss the ass of whatever overbearing finger pointing customer. I?ve seen several great engineers fall to the axe in recent months for trivial bullsh!t reasons. Which have served to erase that warm and fuzzy feeling I?ve always had working here. SO I decided to investigate one of the opportunities one of my former boss has been shaking in my direction for a while. I interviewed with them a couple of times, and apparently made a good impression because they came back to me very interested and an excellent offer in hand.

The issues?

1.) while my company may be going down the tubes as far as management goes? the fellow engineers I work with on a daily basis are some of the best people I?ve ever worked with, all of whom I consider not only co-workers but friends? and I will truly mourn not being able to work with them any more.
2.) I?m currently in the most senior position on this particular project and as such hold a key role, my leaving would really put some people in a tight spot.
3.) I am very secure in my current position and my complaints are based on principle and not necessarily fear for losing my job.
4.) If I stick it out and this project pulls through, I would establish myself as virtually indespensible to the company and my future with them would be ensured for years to come
5.) The current position would be static in my current area, with little hope of being available to me should I decide to move for whatever reason. Whereas the new company has locations all over the united states, and I would have little problem simply moving to a different location and keeping my job.

The offers?.

You have to do what's best for you. Would your co-workers stay if they got an offer for basically $20,000 more than what they are making now? I would venture to guess no. Don't look at your leaving as putting stress on your other co-workers, but leaving the opportunity open for them to be promoted within the company and make a name for yourself.

It's nice that your trying to look out for the wellbeing of your co-workers, but sometimes you just have to look out for yourself.

I would take the new job but it is a lot easier for me to say that not feeling the emotions that you are feeling. Still to me, as long as you are pretty sure that everything will work out in your new job, money is money.

Dude.....

Realize that 17k more a year is as much as some people MAKE in the entire year.

Take the new job.

Factor in difference in cost of living whereever this new job is but even given that, I still think the second job is a better offer. It's always hard to go somewhere new but there are plenty of smart cool coworkers so you should be able to make new friends there.

$97k for IT work?!?!?

If you are good, absolutely! It's a lot more common than you might think.

What the hell am I studying EE for, all this pain and suffering and I'll only be making a fraction of 97k

"The Island" was a great movie, we enjoyed it a lot. Nice deal on the SD200 for $159 out the door!

You enjoyed The Island?! It was like a Bruckheimer film with even less of a story (if that's even possible). Well, at least Scarlett Johannson was hot so it wasn't a total waste of 2 hours.

That's not true. The prospects are really almost equal I'd say, and if you're good at what you'll do you'll find paths that will separate you from your peers, and in so doing you'll find yourself making a lot more. You obviously have to be at the top of your game, and the more you can lend yourself to the business the better. I think the latter part is the largest failing for most techies, both engineer and IT monkey.

If you play it right you should see six figures.

I think the most important thing is the people you work with, but what you really have to decide is a) are the new people going to be great to work with as well, and b) are the old people worth giving up $20,000 for?

It's not a no-brainer, but I would definitly say the new job is a better option.
