That's called Pascal's Wager. Not much of a reason to believe in God IMHO. That would be like believing in Santa Claus just because if you do, you get presents, if you don't, you get nothing. I'm sure God would love to have people "believe" merely as a contingency plan.

Very true. I'm a Christian and I would be a Christian even if there was no heaven or hell. Ponder that for a while and see if that doesn't blow your mind.
Unfortunately, most "Christians" seem to use the church as a social gettogether or are there because they're hedging their bets just in case there actually is a God.
I'm not going to explain why I'm a Christian. It's a message that only has meaning to those who are ready to hear it and, trust me, practically nobody on this forum is.
But I was once a cynic. I had gone to church, but didn't become a Christian until I was 20. I spent an entire year in near solitude thinking more deeply about life than most of you will in a lifetime. I read about every major religeon and mythology, but I didn't seek guidance from any man. I followed the same path Dante took out of the Inferno.....logic. Cold, hard, horrifying, merciless logic. When you ask the question "Why?" infinitely to every great question of humanity and answer it honestly, you will come to certain inevitable conclusions that leave you with still further questions. This requires a state of true humility and honesty that most people only pass through briefly in their lifetime. In any case, I'm not going to go more in depth....I'm going to get enough rolleyes as it is. But, rest assured, when you're seeking the Truth with an open heart it will be there waiting.

So you are bothered by the very presence of religious threads in OT? <snip> if this is not the proper forum, where is? What is the point of OT Gurck?

Would you be bothered by the presence of an atheist-oriented thread in OT? You may say you wouldn't be, but chances are you'd just label the OP a troll Even if you truly wouldn't be, most would. A thread quoting the bible is a direct insult to non-christians. The OP of that post even had to claim it was in the name of education to save a little face. ANY thread about religion or politics is bound to start, at the very least, a vehement argument. The point of an OT forum isn't for vigorous debate. As I've stated, I'm in the "P&N&R" / new forum camp on the issue.

I AM an atheist, and no why would I be insulted. And how is quoting the Bible an insult to you, me, or any other non believer out there?
And OT can be a place for vigorous debate, and it's a shame it isn't. Hell, back in the day it was (for as much as I can remember anywho). Now it has degenerated into OMG I cut my toenails!

You should feel, if not insulted, a little put off by someone spewing scripture in an attempt to convert you. You don't have to feel threatened to feel this way, just that OT is not the place to sell stuff. If you're against free ipod s(c/p)am, you should be against someone trying to underhandedly sell religion as well. It's the principle.
I'm not sure what OT should be, really. Personally I feel it should be somewhere in between religion/political flamefests and toenail discussions / people telling Syringer "spider". Of course, it's really not my place to determine what belongs here & what doesn't. I don't see how anyone can condone religious proselytizing in it though.

So you're response in feeling offended is to go and offend a bunch of other people?
Once fixed, an excellent question.Originally posted by: meltdown75
I thought this was covered by one of the mods already. The mods moderate the discussion in these forums - if we get out of line they'll let us know. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Why are there atheism police now? And how did they get anointed so?

You are. Correction. Note that not a word I've said on the subject has been unprovoked by those trying to spread christianity via tech forums.Originally posted by: meltdown75
you seem to be pushing atheism a lot more than the religious zealots are pushing their opinions. Again correct me if I'm wrong
Interesting assumption, my best guess is that christianity or the effect it's had on popular opinion allows you to have no problem with the double standard. In either case, you'd do good to look past it and see realityOriginally posted by: BigJ
No, not quite. You believe you're better than the fundies that spout off about their beliefs, yet you wind up doing the same thing. Pot meet kettle?

Let me break it down for you. You say that religious threads offend you. So would you not say atheist threads offend religious people?
So since you were offended, you go out and offend another person.

My friend is a brainwashed Christian and he says that I offend him when I turn down his attempts to convert me. I don't try to convert him, but he says it's his mission to convert people around him to Christianity. He says there can be no other way.
All I want from him is to leave religion out of it. I don't knock Christianity when he's around, but every time he brings the topic of religion up every time I see him and he won't stop.
I've heard the saying. Unlike you though, apparently, I don't believe everything I'm told. In this case I think it's more useful to speak out against opression than to take it laying down.Originally posted by: BigJ

You implied it by taking up issue with my thread and not Stark's bible-thumping one.Where did I say that it was alright for people to post religious threads and not atheist threads?
